Default 1992 ES300 Battery/Alternator dying

??? While driving the car started losing power, all interior dash lights died and headlights became very dim....battery died. Checked battery connections (all good) and got a jump. About 5 minutes later, it happened again and untimately had to coast into my driveway...had no power.

The battery and the connections are both good. I was thinking it was the altenator. However, after charging the battery, I removed the battery connections while the car was running and it did not die, which means the altenator is good, right?

Really not sure what could be the problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Removing either or both battery connections while engine is running...VERY BAD. Just test the voltage at the battery, connected, while engine is running, should be about 14V if the alternator is charging properly.

Thanks for your response....checked the voltage at the battery like you said and it is at 14V. I had initially thought it was the altenator because while driving with the headlights ON the car started to die, but once I turned them OFF the car would continue running. Is there any other issue that would cause this type of power loss?

....also...the voltage ran 14V but as it warmed up and idle slowed it dropped to 12V. I did find a vacuum leak in the resonator hose. Working on fixing that leak. If the voltage on altenator drops as it did, could the altenator be going bad possibly?

Thanks again

Ths issue needs to be correctly diagnosed. Before you spend any money and effort chasing your tail, why don't you bring your car in to your closest Autozone store where they will perform a battery and charging system diagnosis free of charge.

You will than be in a much better position to determine what to do next.
