Did a search but didn't find anything...my tech says that my compressor bearings are going, at 120k miles. Was wondering if this seems normal for this car, '01 ES 300.

120k miles and 11+ years? Things don't last forever... what are the symptoms? It certainly doesn't shock me to hear...

Loud whining noise....not the belts, just had those lubed/changed. Tech says it's the bearings.

Guess my expectations for Lexus were/are high. Bought the car w/ 111k miles last Sept and w/ this, will already have put in about 50% of what I paid for it. (just got finished w/ a $1k bill to solve the Traction Control/Check Engine light problem). I'm wondering if I have a problem car -- I bought it off someone in town who had been taking it to my mechanic, so they 'vouched' for it as a good, solid car.

And, compared to owning four Volvos and three Hondas in my lifetime, all which went over 150k (my Civic went 250k) miles, I've never had to replace an AC compressor (certainly other things). Guess I have been very lucky.

Mine went at 130k or so.

So i got a new one from Rockauto for 250$

Turn off the AC and see if the noise goes away, if it does he's likely correct. If the noise persists then it could be an idler pulley or something along those lines.
