Default Transmission Problem Es300 160K

Hello everyone,

I new here and was wondering if I could get some help. I own a 2001 lexus es300 with 160K miles. one day i started the car and there was a winding noise coming from the engine tranny. I drove the car to work and everything was fine but on the way back the noise got louder and the car went out of gear. Now when i start the car and its cold it will drive for about 30 feet and pop out of gear. Does this mean my transmission is shot?

thank you

Before you do anything else check your transmission fluid for proper level (engine idling and fluid hot)

Also Check for color and odor.

How long have you had this car?

Anything done to the transmission that you know of?

I have this car 3 years now. I have no idea if the transmission had anything done to it. When i checked the oil level it was good but the oil had a burnt smell to it..

Sounds like your transmission failed due to lack of maintenance.

Your best bet at this point is a drain and refill with Toyota thpe T- IV transmission fluid and see what happends.

Advance apologies for asking this question in this thread -

- 2005 ES330, 101k miles, well maintained
- transmission fluid pink/purple color, no brown or dark color
- lexus manual says change it at 60/120k only if driven primarily while towing

Does it need transmission fluid change or should I wait until I see any signs of trouble?

Added later - Saw response to my similar question by MrBooby in other thread -

In case of emergency only. Brake fluid will really saturate / inflate. The seals nessesary to build the nessesary pressure ur trans needs to shift drive ect. But will eventually. Fail. So. If yo ist need to get to work. Until next pay period so you can afford tranny this will work. REMEMBER EMERGENCY ONLY THIS WILL ONLY RUN. FOR. SO LONG.

Don't wait until you see signs of trouble but don't try to be more royal than the king either. A simple one drain and refill at the proper mileage, which will refresh about one-third of the total fluid capacity, is enough to preserve the transmission health and shifting quality.

Did you try the drain and refill? If so, did it work?
