If you have the owner's manual, it will tell you (with a nicely detailed picture) what number every bulb in the car is. If not, you can always take the burned out bulb out and the number will be on it.

I do not have the owner's manual (bought the car used and I guess the original owner trashed it)

I removed the light assembly and I looked and there were only two bulbs in the lighting structure....and none of those 2 bulbs even lit up the section that is dead at the moment....are there any hidden bulbs possibly "inside" of the lighting assembly itself ?

I'm not sure what area of the rear lamps you're talking about, but keep in mind that only the top row is utilized in these vehicles. The bottom strip is only there for symmetry/design.
