Lightbulb 92-96 Radio and Climate light bulbs - LCD backlight

I had two of the bulbs behind the climate control lcd burn out recently. I'm sure many of you have the same problem. After weeks of searching, I finally found the replacement bulbs. It is the same bulb that lights the lcd on the stock radio. It is availiable from Pioneer Parts. 1-800-457-2881

1992-1996 Lexus ES-300 Radio with CD changer controls

Pioneer Model Number KEX-M8346ZT
Toyota Part Number 86120-33021

Quantity Voltage Current Part Number Price
2 8v 100mA CEL124? $5.19
13 8v 60mA CEL1222 $3.43

The LCD backlight is the 8v 100mA bulb. There are 3 bulbs in the climate control and 2 in the radio. The 8v 60mA bulbs go behind all the buttons in the radio.

The green color comes from a rubber boot that fits over the bulb. I found a company that sells blue boots. I switched my climate control and radio to the blue backlight (and replaced the 5 bulbs) - it looks pretty tight.

I forgot the part number for the 100mA bulb, so I will have to look at the reciept later.

I might consider changing the bulbs and color boots for you guys that are scared to do it yourself - just holler and I'll think of a cost.

The part number for the 8v 100mA bulb is CEL1247.

You can also make the backlight amber by removing the color boots completely.

So what do you guys think about the blue???

It is not very easy to do, but here is how.

Once you have the climate control apart, take all the screws out that you see (that hold the front cover to the board). Then I think there are three screws that hold the white lcd housing to the board.

CAREFULLY bend the entire lcd back, using the white housing to hold on to. You will see the place where the three bulbs are attached to the board.

Bend the lcd back enough to remove the white housing completely. It will make it much easier to solder the new bulbs in place with the housing out of the way.

Order the new bulbs from:
Pioneer Parts 1-800-457-2881
Part # CEL1247

I did this several times and the lcd didn't break, so just be careful and you should be fine.

does the whole climate control piece come out, for just the face? last night i was trying it, and i got the left side of the face loose, but it looked like there was a screw on the right side that was holding it in. it doesn't seem like i can pull the big piece out far enough to get to the screw. did you happen to encounter this problem?

Once you have the entire module pulled out, there are two tiny black screws on each side of the face. After removing those screws, you have to use a flat head screwdriver and separate the face from the housing. After that, unplug the 2 wiring harnesses that connects the face to the housing. Now you should take out all the screws that hold the board to the face, and unplug the wiring harness that goes from the board to the temperature ****.
Now see the previous post to get to the bulbs.

Good luck!

P.S. Be careful, it's probably expensive to replace the whole thing.

I ordered them from a place called Sunray Lighting in Irvine, CA.

www.sunraylighting.com
1-800-8-LIGHTS

Part Number: 39-06-5a
Description: T1-1/4 WT BLUE BOOT

They have other colors too if you want to experiment. They have two shades of blue, but the lighter shade looks white when you install it. I would recommend the part listed above. It is a dark blue boot.

Any boot that fits a T1-1/4 size bulb would work.

I went to topbulb.com and found bulbs that can be used in the climate control, radio and also instrument panel. They are much cheaper.

I used #7371 for the LCD backlight, they cost 0.98 each. I also bought #7344 for 0.90 each and they would work for the LCD backlight.

I used the #2182 which cost 0.55 each for the sockets that light up the buttons. You take the burned out bulbs from the plastic screw-in holders and replace them. I also bought #2180 @ 0.55 each which will also fit for this application.

I also bought #194 @ 0.41 each and #74 @ 0.46 each for the instrument panel lighting.

Lightbulb Bulb Derating

I would like to share with you guys some tips that may be helpful.

No, you can't buy the bulbs at the corner Auto Parts Store. Could you find a bulb that would work? PROBABLY YES.

Assuming you find a bulb that is the right size physically, you need to pay attention to the electrical specs.

Bulbs typically have four different electrical ratings:
1. Life - Rated in hours
2. Current - Rated in milliamps
3. Voltage - Rated in volts
4. Brightness (MSCD) - Stands for Mean Spherical Candela, aka "candlepower"

Unfortunately, most bulbs at the Auto Parts Store don't have all this information on the package, but most web sites do.

As an example, lets say that the original backlight bulb is 8v and 0.4 MSCD. You don't want to pay $5 for the original bulb, so you find one on topbulb.com that is 12v and 0.5 MSCD, with a life of 5000 hours.

Now this is where the bulb derating equations come into play (see pic).

The brightness of the new bulb is as follows:
MSCD = ((8/12)^3.5)*0.5
MSCD = .12

:eek: Check this out, since you are running the bulb on less volts is is going to be only 25% as bright as the original!

BUT look what it does to the life of the bulb:
LIFE = ((12/8)^12)*5000
LIFE = 648,732 hours!

Now the bulb will outlast the car (even a lexus)

But that bulb probably isn't going to be bright enough. So, maybe we could try a 6v bulb. It should be plenty bright running on 8v, right? Lets say you find a 6 volt bulb that is rated for 20,000 hours:

LIFE = ((6/8)^12)*20000
LIFE = 633 hours

Assuming you drive your car 2 hours every day, these bulbs will only last less than 1 year. That sucks

THE MORAL OF THE STORY

I tried 3 or 4 different bulbs. They were all either too dim, or they burned out within a few months. Just buy the originals, it will save alot of time and headaches.
