Curious-what engine oil and filter
I'm curious. What engine oil and what brand oil filters does everyone use on their Lexus/Toyota engines. And a more curious question, why? And maybe even how long between oil changes. And lets throw in, what oil additives you might recommend.
This question comes from a conversation last night between a friend, my brother, my son and me.
Interestingly enough, one was saying just how his car was his pride and joy and he changed the oil and filter every 2,000 miles, 9 quarts of Mobil 1 each time. I jokingly told him that I'd take his old oil off his hands.
The other is a 3,000 - 4,000 mile man using Castrol, new filter each time, either 20-50 dino or 5-50 synthetic
The other is a 7,000-7,500 mile man. Dino oil 20-50 w/new filter

oil is just oil, as long as you change it, your car will run ok.
but i don't see the necessity to go for 20w50 or 5w50, those are thick thick oil. if you are running a race motor with huge turbos, sure....run a thick oil and have the engine warm up 5 minutes before each drive...but i don't see a point running those oil on a daily driver.
2000miles per change is a waste. 3000~4000 is fine. 7000 miles is pushing it too far.
also, i don't see why people don't use synthetic oil nowadays since they are so much cheaper now.
as for filter, they are all pretty much the same. I prefer toyota OEM ones. only bad filter i know is FRAM. just go youtube FRAM oil filter review and you'll see.

If you are using synthetic oil I can see a 6,000-7,500 mile interval but that's the maximum. If using dino oil then stick to 3,000-3,500 changes. As for not using synthetic, I purchased my car with 130,000 miles on it. I'd be hesitant to change because of the possibility of leaks. In addition, the 1MZ-FE is a sludge motor and I'd also be concerned about the possibility of unseating a large chunk of sludge and having it block an oil drain. I'm contemplating the change... have not done so yet. I use the K&N filter or WIX if I can't find the K&N. I would not hesitate to use a Baldwin either.

The fleet cars go 200 + thousand miles with no engine problems with regular oil changes. We put a lot of miles on them so they are getting at least 4 oil changes a year. We always use the recommend oil weight .... no exceptions. The Lexus vehicles in the fleet go 5- 5.5k between changes using regular oil with a new filter.
As they age -- like over 200k --- we increase the interval to 7-7.5.
We use Mobil one 0w-40 in a few of the cars -- because that is what they call for and have change intervals in the 12-15k range.
I own more than one personal car and because of the low miles they get I use Mobil 1 in those also. You can go two years between changes with synthetics - I only go a max of one with regular oil.

5w30 synthetic with an OEM filter or something equivalent. With my ES, I'm going to wait about 3000 miles before changing the oil for the second time, because the engine was a bit dirty from the previous owner. After that it will probably be 5000 - 7000.
You really need to send out a sample of your used oil to a lab, such as Blackstone Labs, in order to get a good idea of its condition. They can also tell you how long you can keep the oil for, by looking at the remainder of active ingredients.
