Default KYB 334131 & 334132 Fitment

KYB Part numbers.

334131- Right Hand front
334133- Right Hand rear
334132- Left Hand front
334134 - Left Hand rear

I purchased some KYB GR-2 struts for my 1994 ES300 and am having issues with the install. The spring that was removed from the vehicle is bigger than the strut seat on the KYB. I did a little research and read that the OEM seat needs to be used on the KYB, so I removed the OEM seat and installed it on top of the KYB seat. I then put the spring on and when ever I try to decompress the spring, it moves out of place. This is really becoming a real PITA. I've worked on many vehicles and have never had this much trouble installing springs. I also looked at the mounting holes from the OEM strut and the KYB and it seems like the KYB are further apart them OEM. I know I have the right struts (at least from what KYB's catalog says) but why are they not fitting? I'm about the call it quits and order the Quick-Strut but if anyone has some useful info or tips, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you..

I had the same struts installed on our 94 ES in March of this year and encountered several fitment problems. I am not sure I can help you much since I did not do the work myself; however, I ended up having to purchase some OEM Toyota parts because of the KYB parts not fitting correctly.

When I picked up my car, the garage people returned the new KYB spring seats (part SM5173) to me. Apparently, they removed the old spring seats and installed these on the new struts.

The garage also had problems with the KYB bumper and boot kit (SB101). They indicated to me that the strut would not fit properly into the mount if the KYB parts were used. I had to go to a Toyota dealer and buy two of the front bellows (part 48157-07010) and two front bumpers (48331-06011).

The appearance of the Toyota parts were significantly different from the KYB parts. For example, the Toyota bellows has a flange at the top that fits over the top of the spring while the KYB bellows did not have this. Whether or not this is important I have no idea.

There were also fitment problems with the rear KYB bumpers and bellows. I replaced these with Toyota parts, also. The right rear bellows is Toyota part #48257-32060, and the left rear bellows is #48259-32020. The rear bumpers are part #48341-32052.

All of the Toyota parts that I had to purchase cost an additional $190.00. The total cost on the KYB parts (of which several were not used) was about $730.00.

I called the KYB people and discussed these fitment problems, but I got no satisfactory answer.

Thanks for the info CUMan. I'm dealing with the seller of the struts right now. I bought them on eBay and confirmed the parts numbers with KYB's website before purchasing but I wish I would of know about the fitment prior to the order.

I received a message from the seller of the KYB struts and he said that 94 ES300's that were manufactured later in the year came with struts that they started to use on the 95's which have a bigger seat. He's sending me some fronts for a 95 and hopefully they work.

For what it's worth, I will add one more observation to this matter.

On the Tire Rack website for the KYB GR-2 struts, there is a line that reads: "must use OE spring perch." This is shown on both the 334131 and 334132 listings. I have checked numerous other websites that sell these struts (Rock Auto, KYB Outlet, etc.), and none of them show this info.

Note also that most websites which sell struts for the 94 ES list both "serviceable" and "non-serviceable" struts. I understand that at some point during this model year, Lexus switched to the "serviceable" type. This style strut likely has a removable seat rather than the welded-on type.

As I indicated in my prior post, the folks installing my struts did get them to fit by reusing the original Lexus "spring perch." This item is one part of the KYB "coil spring seat" kit (part SM5173). The other parts of the kit were used in the installation. I would guess that this one part is causing the fitment problems.
