How to replace Windshield wiper controls??
Hey all, the wiper controls in my 96 started going bad this week. Every setting goes at the same speed and the wipers stop where they are when I put the lever in the off position. I took the steering column cover off and started playing around, and it seems there is a short in the system. When I press on the green circuit board (or whatever it is) it works correctly once in a while. I probably need to replace the unit. Do I have to remove the steering wheel to replace it? Is it one unit with the turn signal switch as well? Please help me. Thanks in advance.

Before you replace the entire control, try and repair it first. It sounds like a bad solder joint is the blame by your description. First disconnect the battery, then remove the steering wheel. You will need to pop off the two panels on each side of the wheel and use a torx driver to remove the screws holding on the airbag. Once the airbag is out of the way, loosen the center nut but don't remove it, then sit in the seat and pull the steering wheel loose.
You can then unscrew the wiper control and move it enough to inspect it. If you do need to replace it, it would be far easier to unsolder the 6 wires going to it and solder in the new one. Otherwise you will have to remove the entire mechanism and harness as one piece, which is a lot more work to say the least. Here's a pic of a Camry control 1992-1996, I believe the unit is the same as the Lexus.

A nice friend of mine broke off both the Windshield and Turn Signal Controls on my 2003 GS300....
Found the turn signal control for around $100...
