Is the check engine light on? I'm no mechanic but the first things that come to my mind are:
-IACV needs cleaning
-MAF sensor needs cleaning
-Throttle body needs cleaning
-PCV valve is clogged
-Need new air filter
-Failing o2 sensor
What year ES do you have and how many miles are on your car?
-IACV needs cleaning
-MAF sensor needs cleaning
-Throttle body needs cleaning
-PCV valve is clogged
-Need new air filter
-Failing o2 sensor
What year ES do you have and how many miles are on your car?

I would definitely get an experienced mechanic's opinion because the car may need a good tune-up if you're unsure about it's service history. You may want to try searching the VIN on Lexus.com to see if the car was ever serviced at the dealership.. Just to give you an idea of what you're up against in case you're thinking about doing it yourself.. check out the attached image of the Air Intake Chamber Assembly + Intake Manifold Assembly + sensors etc. (Note: this is the 97-01 ES300 layout)
If you are going to attempt it yourself just make sure you understand that you may be dealing with sensitive electronic components and to handle them carefully... Some of the other members may be able to help you out too.. good luck brother
