Default AUTO climate control switch & A/C switch

Whenever I depress the AUTO climate control button, the A/C button also lights up (every time). Is this normal? I assumed that I could just set my climate control temperature to desired temperature and the system would adjust accordingly? Seems odd that when it is 25-30 degrees (f) outside and I depress the AUTO button that the A/C light also would come on? Sounds like the compressor is also kicking on (which is making some noises also). I have tried figuring it out in the owners manual but can't really come up with anything. Am I possibly overlooking something or does this look like something that needs repaired?

Correct me if I am wrong: Shouldn't I just be able to set the desired temperature that I want, select AUTO, and the climate control system would know whether to use the A/C or the heater to to maintain that desired temperature?

Yeah, that's the way it's designed. If I recall correctly, all of the Toyota-made vehicles that I have owned worked the same way.

Just push the A/C button and turn it off.
