maybe you're car wasn't doing something right. and i don't know why everyone points to motortrend, car and driver is a much better magazine. motortrend needs to try harder and maybe get the same test results as every other magazine that tests the same cars....

What were your tires rated on the car when it was first purchased? That affects the speed limiter.

"V" rated Dunlop SP Sport 4000's

O.E.M replacements to the D40.

I mashed the peddle it wouldn't not go past 126mph.

I tried several times actually.

These data from carpoint
Acceleration: 0-60 mph in 8.1 sec. 1/4-mile in 16.3 sec.

Top Speed: 137 mph

However V rated tyres should be safe for 130mph only

Well my guess is that ES300s equipped with "H" or "U" rated tires were speed governed and those with better tires were not. A lot of manufactures do it this way.

It's not the sort of thing that's set in stone and can vary from car to car.

BTW, I just got a set of Dunlap Sport 4000s. Great tires so far.

Pianoman that's sound like a logical explanation.

Well done!

All the '92-96 ES300s (as well as the '97-99?) were equipped with 205/65VR-15 tires. V rated means good to 149 mph, not 130. H rated means good to 130. BTW, the only Dunlops which were standard equipment from '92-'96 were the D60 A2, not the Sport 4000s or D40. The '92-'96 had either those Dunlops, Goodyear Eagle GAs, or Firestone Firehawk FTX-02 as standard equipment, it varied from car to car but all were 205/65VR-15.

Now, there is no way an ES can hit 149, so no govenor was needed at the time. I said it before, I'll say it again. There is NO LIMITER on the '92-'96 ES. In fact, I don't think there was one until '02. I have tests of a '92 ES hitting 135 in a Car and Driver comparison test, also a '94 going 130, and probably a few more with 130+ mph speeds.

Unhappy

I believe Nabeel. There is no governor on my car and most likely no governor on any ES made in the 20th century. And it really hurts that you implie that me and others are liars for going 130mph in our older ES's

What year is your mom's ES? I was referring to the '92-'96. The SP Sport 4000s could have very well been standard after that. But for the '92-'96 I'm pretty sure that the D60 A2 was the only OEM Dunlop tire.
