Even with the o/d off, it should still shift into fourth when it hits redline in third.

I've got a 98, and I've read that they are governed at 137. I've gotten up to 120 once, and it felt like about 80, it was beautiful. I didn't really take notice of what the RPMs went up to, but it certainly felt like it had some juice left.

If somebody really wants to settle the argument, they should try to contact the manufacturer. The guy that types in all caps and says he knows for sure because the dealership said so is pretty damn gullible if he believed anything the dealership told him. I've had dealerships tell me all sorts of things that turned out to be completely wrong, and I'm sure there's plenty of other people here that have had the same experience.

As far as I know, the speed governor is set by the factory mainly based on your stock wheel/tire setup (I assume Lexus does this too).

They are afraid that you might not be aware of your tires' limits and end up killing yourself when one blows.

That could explain why the governor kicked in for some and not for others.

I don't think anyone is lying (maye some exaggeration ) and I definitely agree that bryce needs to take it easy on the CAPS and figure some stuff out before calling people a liar. Funny though.

I'm kind of confused...why would you take overdrive off....?

Personally I dont think lexus' have governers at all, why would a performance luxury company limit there cars speed to like 90 mph...I mean caman...All of the new MB's and other lux performance cars have govs at like 200 MPH .... I could see GM vehicles topping of at like 80 but thats probably because the tire and wheel setup on stock is crap...Lexus usually puts some good tires on... but i mean caman peeps, you dont see some guy in a lex driving the speed limit, they are usually goin 15 over! =)

I guess thats the way I see it...

blux, im sorry, MBs dont go 200, they go maybe 140 - 150 before goverened. it is united states law to have a governor on the car. they are added if you import it from somewhere like germany where governors arent allowed. and they are usually goverened at above 100, not 80

I don't think there is a law requiring the speed limiters on new cars. The German manufacturers have a gentleman's agreement not to let their cars start any top speed wars, that its why the new Bimmers, Benzes, and Audis are governed. They never had govenors until the mid-90's. Porsche still has no speed limiters, and has no intention of adding any. The new Bentley Arnage tops out at 168 mph (!). Lexuses were not governed until recently. I believe the '98 GS400/LS400/SC400 were the first Lexuses to carry a 150mph speed limiter. I actually have a road test from '95 stating that an LS400 topped out at 156mph back then - pretty impressive.

BTW, I've never heard of any German laws banning speed limiters either. In fact, its somewhat possible that the opposite might just happen. Minority parties in the German government have long been calling for an 81 mph speed limit on the famed Autobahns. I doubt that's ever gonna happen though, there are too many car enthusiasts out there to let legislation pass.

what???? the RS6 can top 200??? that's mind blowing for such a heavy four door sedan!!

I definately feel the older ES's can push past 120mph.

Just yesterday, after school, I was following some friends on the expressway driving an 00 Maxima 5-speed and an 02 Acura RSX type-S, I was hanging right with them as we all saw an open stretch of road and pushed it to about 125-130. Those are the numbers I saw on my speedo, they too saw similiar numbers in their cars, so I definately believe the ES is capable of exceeding 120 mph.

The new twin-turbo version of the Porsche Cayenne SUV is supposed to top 165 mph. That's insanely fast for a 3 ton brick....I want one!

The 2002 ES is, of course, the most areodynamic and powerful ES yet. It has a top track speed of 140MPH. I do not believe any of the older ES's will go any faster than 130MPH.

A '97 ES hit 142 in a Car and Driver test. I believe it may have been a preproduction model though.

The truth is the 1992-1996 ES300 has a governor of 126mph.

Yes, I have reached it. So here is proof.

Ummm ya...It's really true.

Go to the library and get a 1992 Issue of Motor Trend

I maxed my 1992 ES300 at 126 it simply wouldn't go any faster.
