Default Whirring noise? ES300 1998

Hi all,

I'm not sure if I should be worried or not. I hear this whirring noise(for example like if you were using a high power piece of equipment or something) sometimes when I'm driving, but not all the time. It doesn't really matter what speed I am driving(as it happens when I'm not even pressing on the gas and cruising at 20 miles, and when I'm pressing on the accelerator to get to 60) It does seem more pronounced when I'm going uphill.

The problem is, it could all be in my head, and it isn't happening frequently enough to be able to show the mechanic anything. Or at least I don't know where I would even start to explain to him I think I heard a whirring noise.

Last time I was there, he's suggested I do a timing belt replacement as I am at 116k miles. Would the whirring noise come from an almost dead timing belt?

He's not my regular mechanic as I'm going to school down here and also not the Lexus dealer, so I'm not sure how trustworthy/great of a mechanic he is. Everyone recommends him for oil changes though, and I got that changed about a month ago.

Or could it come from the airbag indicator light that constantly went on and off for like 2 weeks, then just turned off completely? It's not on now, but it was going crazy, staying on for three days and then turning off for no good reason just I decide to go to the mechanic.

Would you all just recommend I go to the mechanic anyway even if I can't show the mechanic anything?

Your sound/situation sounds like mine. I hear what appears to be an object tumbling whirling in a can and I usually hear it when I'm climbing a hill, but more pronounced when I have a full car and climbing a hill. Do you have a Check Engine Light on? Well, anyways, I recently just got a CEL for a P0330, whick is for a faulty knock sensor, bank 2. I took it to the Lexus dealer yesterday to have it serviced for the CEL and mentioned to the service tech. about my wierd sound, well, I found out yesterday if from the the faulty knock sensors. They say the car has been misfiring, but because both my knock sensors were bad, the car/ecu could not correct the misfire. So I had them replace both faulty knock sensors and the sub harness' for $860.00. The female service tech is a friend of a friend and she knocked $100.00 off, so it would of been $960.00 and they also, dumped and refilled my transmission fluid, all for $860.00. Good luck to your bro.
