The problem with the starter will act as if the battery is dead or dying -- you will get a click and then the starter may or may not turn - if the Neutral Safety Switch is the problem the starter will not crank at all then it will start normally if by chance you move the shifter and the switch makes contact.

They are different problems.

I have 2002 Es300 with excat same symptoms where battery good, but would not crank. Today I am going to work on the wiring / connector to clean and secure. If that solves the problem, I will nbot replace the starter. If it happens again then i will replace the starter. I believe this is an intermittent electrical connection from the symptoms I and others have. I will post results. If I am right, it sounds like a lot of good starters were replaced. When the starter is replaced, the electrical connections were also cleaned and reseated which probably was the root cause.

I have an 2002 Es same symptoms, 117k miles. Came home from work parked the car in driveway had dinner came out and tried to start the car, and zippo. No cranking, but windows radio all works fine. Jumped the car still no cranking. Tried with a valet key still no cranking. Assuming its the starter. Anyone have how to change starter procedure for this year car? With pics would be great. Thanks all in advance. If I bring it to mechanic, what's a reasonable cost for this job? Thanks.
