Really nobody knows? WIll it simply be stamped in a certain spot? On some kind of options sticker? When shopping for a used trans it shows these two different options. One is cheap, one is very expensive.

I don't have the plate or even a door sticker. Hmmm. Any other way to tell? There were some numbers etched on the top of the trans, but it didn't even resemble the model #s.

A541e//u140e
If it does not say on your driver side door, another way to tell is to actually go underneath the vehicle and count how many bolts are in the transmission pan. 18 bolts = U140E ,,, 17 bolts = A541E .
Be clear about this when ordering one, I did my research prior to ordering one, made sure I told them U140E, and they still shipped me the wrong one. It turned into a big hassle considering they supposedly record their conversations but lost mine. And shipping costs for a transmission can easily be $300 to $400.

If you call any Lexus dealer and give them your VIN number, they should be able to tell you over the phone. Your best bet is the parts department, not the service department.
I believe (but am not sure on that one), that the transmission that you have determines the type of transmission fluid that you MUST use. Either Dexron 3, or Toyota Type iV Transmission fluid. So its important to know what you got.

You have the U140E, it was used on the 1999-2003 ES300.
