Oh that makes more sense. How do they run the DRLs in order to avoid blinding people with high beams? I imagine that they're not as bright as the actual high beams.

I disconnected the wire on the passenger side of the engine compartment near the alarm horn/ diagnostics port to disable the DRL's on my Solara. (Skip to 4:55 in this video):

Since I modded the fogs to run independently, I use those as my DRL's (for both safety and because its required here in Canada). I have an HID kit in my headlights so I don't want those to be running all the time.

Since I have H4 bulbs with both high and low beams I can't unplug one high-beam. I don't recommend going about this way, I'm pretty sure there are easier ways to disable the daytime running lights such as pulling a fuse or relay if you delve into the wiring diagrams.

Isn't that a Honda thing?

Wait if you press the parking brake a few times before starting the car, the DRLs won't come on?

The DRLs do not turn on of if the car has its parking brake on, but they should turn on as soon as you release the brake.

Basically its run in a 12V series, 6V for each high beam which means they run at half power for the DRLs, yes otherwise they would just blind everyone.

The Android app Carista allows you to turn off your daytime running lights. You need one of those ELM dongles to plug into your ODB2 port ($5 on ebay) then the app for $20. Lots of things you can change settings for.

As for the fog lights, you can still use your switch on the turn signal stalk to switch on/off your fogs whenever you want.
This is correct. I disconnected my passenger high beams and my DRLs are disabled now but I can still use the drivers side high beam

Has anyone ever successfully reached the DRL Main Relay, which is *behind* the dash (not under it) ???? If so, how? I can't see any way to get even close to it. I *think* I see it up there, but there's no way to be absolutely certain.

This is weird ... that website that says the Canadian spec 1998 ES300 has a DRL Relay under the dash shows that the Canadian spec 2000 ES300 does not have it -- says "not applicable". The website is "usually" accurate but it would not be the first time that I've noticed an error.

You could look under the dash and see if it has the DRL Relay and, if it does, try cutting the one wire shown in the thread I pointed you too.

Personally, I don't understand why some people hate DRL so much and I certainly can't imagine giving up one of the high beams just to get rid of it. And especially because DRL is required "up there" ... one of my Ontario cousins had to have DRL added when he imported a car from the States back in 2008. It has become apparent from recent research that DRL is not as effective as was once thought but it sure is handy for lighting up underground parking garages and tunnels for the few seconds it takes until the automatic low beams kick on.
