Check Engine & Traction Control lit up/Have Codes.
Hello,
My Check Engine & Traction Control lights illuminated last week with no know problems. I know of the fuel cap issue and that was not problem. Had codes pulled this evening and need some advise.
Codes:
1130
1135
"Manufacturer Control fuel/air metering" according to code reader.
Pending code
"system 2 lean"
Can anyone shed some knowledge as to what I should do or recommend anything. The vehicle has 122k and runs as normal.
Thanks, Mike

P1130 is the A/F sensor bank 1, sensor 1 heater current too high or too low. the other code is also for bank 1 a/f sensor low. Do you have access to a DVM? If so you could read the resistance of the heater to see if it is open. But the only problem you would have is that Bank 1 Sensor 1 is a real pain to reach.
Do you know if the AF sensors (O2 sensors) have ever been replaced? If not they are well overdue, I have heard different figures on the recommended replacement interval, but you have passed them all. If they are the original sensors, I would strongly recomend replacing Bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor one.

To the best of my knowledge with the the car being in family since new, the o2 sensors have never been replaced. I am confused as to the following:Bank 1 sensor 1 and bank 2 sensor one. Does that mean there are more then one sensor per bank?
Once I understand that, if replacing the sensors is recommended, are they easily accessible? I am very mechanical and not afraid of much. I guess the good reason for my lack of Lexus wrench turning....they are great vehicles...ok, I need to knock on wood.

The upstream sensors (bank 1 sensor 1 & bank 2 sensor 1), are used to adj fuel trims (toyota calls them AF sensors, but most manufacters call them O2 sensors). These are the sensors that will cause the codes you have.
There are also downstream sensors, these are used to monitor the catalytic converters. If these go bad they will cause other codes.
Bank 2 sensor 1 is easy to replace, Bank 1 sensor 1 is a real pain. A experience amatuer mechainc with a decent set of tools can replace both sensors, but you will swear at one sensor.
With the code you are getting, and the mileage on your car, I would not even bother trying to troubleshoot further until you replace the sensor. The code is for the sensor heater fault. Heaters have a finite lifespan. Most manufactures recomend replacing them around 80K (give or take a few K).

Thanks George Jet. Is bank 2 the firewall side of engine? Are these O2's the sensors in the exhaust manifolds? Is bank one difficult because it is hard to see/access?

Bank 1 is next to the firewall, Bank 2 is next to the rad. The sensors are located near the cylinder heads. Bank 1 is just a pain to access. If your arm fits, you could try reaching in thru the wheel well (after removing the tire). I removed mine from underneath the car.

Ok, I originally stated the car was not acting any different with the lights on and the 1030, 1035 codes present. Well today she gave a slight hesitation leaving from a dead stop. Very minor but noticeable. The car would idle perfectly in gear. Then this evening it seemed as if the car would not go into overdrive! My faithful beautiful Lexus is irritating me.

I already contacted my cousin at Lexus Dealership to drop off monday morning. I was just hoping to replace/repair what needed to be done with information obtained from this forum. I am glad i have the codes and what they mean going into the dealer so they cannot try and ream me, but I am wondering if anyone knows if the overdrive situation may also be apart of the smae problem or not?
