Thanks Flipside. Great info!
02-04 - 1MZ-FE 3.0 - 192/200/210+/210+
Is this engine being dicontinued after 2004? Perhaps being replaced with a new Toyota 3.3L I've been hearing about...
To answer the original question, can you use 87 octane in your ES300, yes you can.
Does this apply to the VVT-i versions of this engine as well?
Actually, are there any "premium fuel" cars these days that can't take regular fuel? I assume all of them have computers that can adjust the timing accordingly.

If Toyota plays their cards right with the 5 year plan...with the 3rd year of production of usually powertrain revisions even introduction of a new motor and or tranny, and the 4th year of production exterior fascia update, Toyota should be using that new 3.3L in the whole Camry and related line i.e. Solara, Avalon, Sienna, Highlander, ES300 and RX300. 2004 is the target year for a new powertrain...unless Toyota marketing does something unconventional and introduces it earlier. The next Sienna is coming for 2003 and should feature that new motor.

Well the knock sensors are there for a reason and for some reason you cannot obtain premium fuel, the manual will clearly state either mid grade or lower can be used with reduced performance or for a temporary time period. Most modern vehicles' ECU's will adjust timing accordingly according to what the knock sensors read out.

the main reason i ask is not to present the leveling of camry and ES...
cuz i want to knw what parts fit the camry will fit perfectly for the ES too... (due to the market had lots more camry parts than ES)
also i want my ES to be JDM.... so i dont mine put the toyota emblem on the trunk.......and said "TOYOTA WINDOM"
which look more younger....(NICE)

Don't get me wrong, I like my ES ok, but it's not that great of a car. I consider it to be a "starter" Lexus. You have to own a SC430, a LS430, or atleast a GS to appreciate what Lexus is all about, and to be up there with the big boys. But an ES is just what is says, Economy Sedan. It's just a Camry with a Fancy name. IMO, of course.
that is totally what i think. i like my ES but it's not as fast as i want it to be. i consider it to be my training lexus till i can afford a GS.

does my car have an ECU? would it make it faster if i were to do as people in here say and reset it by discon the batt?
would it mess with the gas mileage?

Unless you're attempting to go all out (speeding around a track or something), I'd doubt you'd notice any difference at all.

All modern cars have ECU's...otherwise your car wouldn't run. Resetting the ECU via battery disconnect or removing the EFI fuse for a few seconds only resets everything to FACTORY OEM specs. Whoever told you your car would go faster by resetting the ECU is totally mistaken. LOL

I haven't caught the whole discussion, but apparently the GS ECU's adjust performance based on your driving style, so if you drive nicely most of the time, the computer will kinda smooth out and calm down the car's acceleration. Some of the guys over there have perceived a boost in performance by resetting the ECU back to the "unlearned" settings.

I doubt this would work with our car's, especially the older ones.
