First of all let me say hello to everyone here. I recently inherited a 2002 ES300 w/ 110k and have been reading some of the technical solutions provided by your knowledgeable members. I was hoping you guys can help with this question.


My engine check light came on last week and went to my INDY to check it out. He recommended replace the O2 sensor in Bank 2 sensor 1.

The local Lexus dealership quoted me $213.00 for the part alone. Then i Found this on Ebay:

I asked the ebay seller if this would be compatible for my car. His response:"Yes it is good for your car because Denso 234-4209 is a universal sensor"

I need your recommendation on this part so that i may say some money.

Hi,
Today is your lucky day. I just changed my Oxygen Sensor recently. Every easy. Go to local Autozone and rent a tool box for free, you have to put the deposit down and you will get it back when you return the tool box. Following the diagram below to locate the O2 sensor. There are 4 sensors. 2 for bank 1 (one air fuel sensor and one heat oxygen sensor) and 2 for bank 2 (one air fuel sensor and one heat oxygen sensor). I went a great length to get this diagram below, so save it and share with others to save them $$$$. Good luck and have fun. If you have any other questions, write me in my mail box. DDGS350. That car will last you a long time (300,000++ miles), just change the oil and the air filter regularly, these are the 2 most significant matters for the car.

Universal means it doesn't fit unless you modify it to fit. You will have to cut wires. Personally, I'd get an OEM fit Denso sensor and it would plug right in, but it will cost more.

I agree 100%. I went to a major chain repair place. They ordered a non Lexus oxygen sensor, because it would cost less. Well it ended up costing more, because I ended up having to go to a Lexus dealer and get the cheap oxygen sensor replaced with a Lexus oxygen sensor.

Why didn't the universal one work out for you? I just paid $270 for a set of 4 universal ones from PepBoys when the direct fit type would have cost over $400, I figure my mechanic can cut and splice the universal ones with no problem right?

That is exactly what Pep Boys did to me. The plug on the cheap oxygen sensor did not match the Lexus socket. So they "cut and spliced" the wires from the oxygen sensor to the plug socket, then taped the wires up. After that, my car jerked during moderately hard acceleration. I did not know Pep Boys had cut and spliced the wires from the cheap oxygen sensor, but I was tired of ther problems, and so I decided to go to the place, a Lexus dealer, where I felt confident they could fix my car, although I knew they are very high priced. They found the spliced oxygen sensor, showed me, and replaced that with the proper Lexus oxygen sensor. After that, my wallet was about $500 lighter, but at least my car ran normally.
