You really need to do it a couple times making sure you fill the tank up all the way each time. That said you need the gallons put in, in your case $38.25/$2.61= 14.7 then take your 270 miles and divide by the 14.7 and you get 18.3

1- Fill up your tank and set the trip mileage back to zero.
2- Drive your car until your tank is about ¼ full.
3- Once again fill up your tank(Preferably at the same pump that you originally used).
4- Divide the amount of mileage (As registered on your odometer) by the amount of fuel used in MPG(Miles per gallon)
This will give you the most exact way of measuring your fuel consumption, moreso than using the trip computer.
Naturally, if you use your car for city driving, the fuel mileage will be worse than when you use it for strictly highway driving.
