In morning when I drive my car , shift from 3rd to 4th gear takes arround 3 + rpm . But after driving my car for a mile or so ( when engine warms up ) then from 3rd to 4th gear, shifts below 3 rpm . All shifts are smooth .
Is it oil ?
Is it normal ? .
I will appreciate any input

1997 . what you think about this late shift in upper gears when engine is cold? Is it oil , trany problem or just normal behavior ?

This delay in shifting when cold is perfectly normal. The computer is programmed this way.

+1. It's normal since it will warm up the engine better. Whether it's additional wear and tear on a cold transmission, that's up to debate.

yes same deal on my 95 es300, but after few minutes perfectly fine. in one of the other threads, someone wasnt sure if that was considered a slipping transmission. because if it was someone said dont drive the car until fluids were flushed. something like that.. but im glad to hear that it is normal.

I have a 92 Camry V6 LE (Same Engine as 92-96 ES300s)

I've had a slipping problem from 1st to 2nd gear from stop/slow. It basically will not shift until about 7.5k RPM, unless if I let off the accelerator to "trick" my car into shifting into 2nd. Also, if I try to drive it more peppy, giving it more gas, it will hesitate and downshift but give me virtually no power. I've been driving it this way since Spring 2006. I drive about 1,750 miles/mo. so it's been like this for about 12,000 miles.

It's annoying, yes, but it's been managable to drive. I'm still keeping the Camry but currently looking for a 97-01 ES300 as a replacement.

Wowzers I never knew Camries revved that high! (typo?!)

Actually, the warm up sequence on my ES is quite annoying. Until the temp needle is above the bottom line, it will NOT shift past 2nd gear unless I rev it past 3250rpm. Of course, for the sake of the car I avoid high revs on a cold engine so I end up plodding around at 2750rpm which is about 30mph. Okay for the neighborhood, but if it's still stuck in 2nd by the time I get onto larger faster roads, I feel embarrassed driving so slow.

If I let off the gas it will shift around 2.5-3k

OMG..haha thats how i 'fix' the problem too just let og of the gas and let it shift. Sometimes, the tranny 'jerks' when this happens and my friend who's in the car asked me if i was driving a 5 sp manual

when that happens, try flushing out all the tranny fluid and replace it with fresh fluid... It could help in smoother shifting and no longer having to "trick" your car into shifting by letting off the gas

I thought flushing tranny fluid over 90k is bad for the transmission?

I've flushed the tranny fluid. It actually was the first thing I tried. I just don't want to shell out $700+ for a car with 180,000 miles, lol. As long as it gets from point A to B.

NOoo! is it realatively that *cheap* to rebuild a transmission?!?!
I was gonna get a sc 300 if it will cost <$2000
