Default gas mileage on 04 ES330

hi all,

Recently bought an 04 ES330 with 15k miles.. Love the car except for the placement of the cup holders. However, I've filled up gas twice so far, and in both cases, the Range in the dash reads 283 miles. I figured an 18 Gallon gas tank with minimum MPG should read 360 miles. Does anyone have a similar problem?

For comparison sake, my 92 camry (died in a car crash - loved the car), with its 15 gallon gas tank used to reach 200 miles before it reached 1/2 tank, and I used to get about 345 miles...

Thanks in advance...

do you have aggressive driving styles? i know i can easily get 21 or more mpg if i drove like my granny, but with my ECT on and flooring it i only get mid 18s.
also check see if your air fliter is dirty

I have found the Range displayed in the dash is actually misleading. In my car it always reads about 280 but I actually get approx 330 miles per tank. I measure actual mileage by resting the mileage indicators/readers after filling the tank.

you are figuring it not quite right.
The range is actually miles until reserve. The idiot light comes on when the range displays 20 miles. You will still have 2.5 to 2.0 gallons of gas left. This is the reserve. The tank is 18.5 gallons.

My 02 ES (same deal) displays ~325 miles when filled up and then I get to zero miles on the range I still have about 2 gallons left in the tank. Keep in mind that the 325 is not totally accurate and is based on continuous calculations of the average mpg registered and the amount of gas in the tank.

Figure your mileage accurately. Fill the tank, set trip meter to 0, drive until tank is 1/4 full or less. Fill it up. Divide total miles driven by actual gallons pumped on second fill up.

If you want, disconnect the battery and totally clear out the ECU, the Range mileage should reset to about 325-345 miles upon fillup.

thanks for your replies guys..

I should check the air filter - read instructions somewhere for this since it is a bit tricky.

I do set the trip to 0.. I add the range and the miles driven, which come out to 283 miles. I do floor it at times but not all the time. I've driven about 70 miles so far so I'll keep an eye on it as it comes to empty.

Thanks all - have a happy turkey day.

its a piece of cake. Two 10mm bolts, one screw, lift up cover, pull out filter, put in new, replace screw and bolts.........all done.
