How long should my Transmission last?
I have a 1999 ES300 with 140,000 miles on it. The transmission shifts perfect but I am curious how long they usually last? I love the car and have done all the preventive maintinence, water pump, timing belt, all belts for that matter. What has your guys experiance with transmisions been?

Well. They don't have any physical defects anyone knows about so if you change your fluid like a good boy from day one. Indefinately.
Say 300,000m+. There are more & more 250-300,000m Camry v6's in the 87-96 range every day so...
It'd probably last a big ole long time if you put an auxillary cooler on it.

my 96 camry auto tranny has 96k miles on it and i dont think the tranny fluid was ever changed. I checked the condition of the fluid thru the dipstick the other day and the color of the fluid was grey-black. Smells a little burnt too. Now i was going to change it right away but then i read about it online. Many experts recommend you don't change the fluid on an old car with mileage over 80k if it has never been done before. They said it does more harm than good. It can destroy the transmission right away. I spoke to a co-worker about this and he said it's true. It happened to his brother's car. So how long can i expect this transmission to last with the current tranny fluid?

Hmmm well I would get a complete flush if I were you. That can't be good for it. Don't just drain the oil though as it's only 3.5 quarts when you do that and there are about 8 in the system.

^^ If you plan to do as close to a complete flush of the tranny fluid, the best route is to do continuous drain-and-refills. One drain-and-refill will probably flush out 2-3 quarts at a time.
