Default Check Engine Light

Driving along I recieved a check engine light on my 1998. The engine runs fine and has 78000 miles on it. What are the common possibilities for causes? Any help would be appreciated.

It could be something very minor to something where you have to get it checked out. I had a similar situation before... getting a check engine light turned on while driving. I opened the hood and realized that my tranny dip stick was not in properly... so this kind of simple things could trigger the sensor.. check througly under your hood for any loose connections like this...

if you cannot find anything.. just drive the car up to autozone and since your car would use a OB2.. they have the equipment to check n let you know whats the problem is (FOR FREE) ..
good luck !!!

Cool

sk gave u the best advice anyone can give. Go get the code scanned for free. Most places do it, Autozone's do it by default & most places in North America have one locally.
Write down any codes that come up. Get back with us & we'll let you know what the computer tells you is the problem is & then we'll go over what are the likely possible causes of the problem.

(If somebody called the doctor & asks, "I'm sick. What's wrong?". Could the doctor give you an answer? Not really.
The same goes for cars. If you tell us your check engine light is on & don't tell us any symptoms, or information about the CEL. We can't really give you an answer either. We can give you several hundred guesses, but no real answer.)

Which is the great thing about computers now adays. For all intensive purposes, you don't *need* to know anything about your car if you don't want too. (Tho you should.)
All you *need* to know is how to descriptively describe anything that's going on & what the computer tells you.

Believe it or not, a possible cause is that the gas cap is not tight enough. That happened to me. I removed the cap, replaced it securely, until it clicked a couple of times, and removed and then put right back in the fuse in the engine compartment for the engine control unit, in an attempt to reset the 'Check Engine" light. It worked. It may not be necessary to pull the fuse, but I did it anyway.

It is offten the gas cap but it is a good idea to pull the fuse because on some cars it can take up to 52 key starts to re-set the check engine light

Cool

What in the hell...
Toyota/Lexus/Scion OBD-II

The longest stored codes are 2, to 3 trip codes. But just because it should trip on 2-3 trips for most things, doesn't mean it will.

He still needs to scan the code. Random, blind troubleshooting is not constructive.

my o2 sensor is broken on my es300 96', the dealer said only original factory o2 sensor would work, not any after market o2 sensors. is that true or are they just trying to rip me off? thanks

you may have some condensation in the gas tank or your fuel system needs a good cleaning. i would use a container of gas treatment and also octane booster with your next gas fill up. it does the trick when my "check engine" light comes on.

Cool

Just like an o2 sensor isn't an o2 sensor. It's a lambda, or heated lambda sensor, or an EGO, or HEGO sensor.
3,000 names, but everyone knows what part you're talking abot.
