O2 sensor...
My sister's check engine light came on on her 95 ES300 a few days ago... We brought it to the dealer today to check it out and they said that the O2 sensor needs replacing. They also went ahead and gave us a quote... $300 for parts and $300 for labor. wtf? Is this a must fix... What happens if we don't have it done right away? Anything else....

I have a 95 es 300 also and I just had my O2 sensor replaced a couple of months ago for $400, but the O2 sensor is mainly to control emissions. Also if you wait for a long period of time the embalance of oxygen could plug up your catylic converter and you would eventually have to replace that too.

these O2 sensors can be had on the web for alot less, but you have to know which of the 3 is the bad one.
There was a web site that offered OEM sensors for around $100 each. you can try lexus parts wholesalers, too, like www.newlexusparts.com, www.lexus-parts.com. You also might try contacting member JPI. He is and authorized dealer on this site and other sites.
There easy to replace once you get at them.
As stated, the car will drive with a faulty O2 sensor, but you gas mileage may suffer and ultimately the cat will fail prematurely. Those ain't cheap either. Not to mention that the CEL will become an eyesore.

I replaced mine a while back. I got a Bosch O2 sensor for 30 bucks. It is really easy to change. You just unscrew it out of your exhaust unhook the wire. Screw in the new one and plug it back up. Cheap and easy. I would not pay 300 for part s and 300 for labor!

How often should O2 sensors be replaced? I read somewhere every 50,000 miles. That seems too frequent but preventative maintenance is always good practice. I have over 213,000 miles and I still have the orginal O2 sensors.

There are three O2 sensors on a 95 ES300. Two are located on the headers, one for each bank. The other is after the cat. Were they replacing all three sensors?
Autozone sells the OEM sensor for $150 and a universal sensor for $70. You have to splice in the universal sensors into the factory plug. A good muffler shop could put them in for way under $300.

Just changed both O2 sensors. The front was very easy but the rear was a pain in the you know what. For the rear I had to remove the passenger seat because the O2 sensor plug is under the carpet underneath the passenger seat. Total time I spent was a little bit over an hour. Now my check engine light is off so I feel much better now. I have about 215k miles and this is the first time I changed the O2 sensors.
