First tickets in 15 years
So this morning I got a 84 in 70 wreckless driving and damn tint ticket. Owned my car for 6 weeks now. First 4 weeks I didn't even drive it cause I was out of town training for work. Had tint one week.
Sucks! But still so in love with it!!

Heh. I had my car for a couple months. Still learning the DCC (Dynamic Cruise Control). So I set it on 80 to follow the guy behind (limit was 70) and he sped up so my 2014 ES sped up. Then the officer nailed me at 77+ (10% over). Errr...

Just came back from a visit to Florida. Met an old friend from Philly PD who is now a motorcycle cop in Ft. Myers. He told me that the speed limit is 70 and he gives you to 78. I tried it in a BMW 5 series and came away with no tickets after 867 miles...

And almost no one travels at the posted speed limit. If one tries to do the exact speed limit they get blown off by everyone passing them at higher speeds. Just human nature I guess...

The issue is that speed limits in general aren't set to "safe speeds" for a road, or even average speeds. People drive a set speed depending on a roadway, and studies show that speed doesn't really correlate to a speed limit as you might think it would. For instance raising limits from 55 to 65 then to 70 on interstates doesn't increase average speeds. What it does is reduce ticket revenue.

A few years ago, a guy and his wife were killed nearby on a two lane section of Pacific Coast Highway that has concrete barriers on both sides. It was estimated he was doing 90-100 mph while passing a student driver and he hit a van almost head on. If he had waited about 45 seconds at the 50 mph speed limit, the road changes to 4 lanes and passing would have been no problem.

I agree with you - was just sharing an event that seems to support Brent's statement that not a whole lot of time is saved by being impatient while driving and can sometimes have tragic results. I think probably most of us use that 5 over rule and it works out ok. Issue here in CA is at 5 over, generally you're passed by others like you are standing still so sometimes it's safer to stay with the flow of traffic.

There's a difference between out of control speed, aggressive driving, and driving along at a speed which makes sense with the conditions and the flow of traffic irregardless of the posted speed limit. Of course somebody driving 90-100 MPH on a public road is crazy. But me driving 80 in a 70 zone when the flow of traffic is 80 is not crazy or unsafe.
A driver is a danger if they are abnormally faster or slower than the average speed around them. If the traffic is moving at 80 MPH and the speed limit is 55, somebody going 55 is a lot more dangerous than somebody going 80...
