Why I Sold My ES300h and Trying Mercedes
#16
A few years ago, I traded in an es 300 for a used certified e350 4matic. I wanted to try something new and jumped ship. For the first few months, I loved the car but each time I took the car in for service there was something else wrong with it that wasn't covered under the warranty. At the end of the third year, where my warranty was running out I asked how much it was to get an extra year or two of warranty and the cost was $4,000 for one year!
A few days after that I got my es300h which I love. I liked the Mercedes but way too much nickel and diming and also a very low resell value.

The Germans improved their reliability significantly alright, but only during the warranty period. They are engineered with the precision to fail precisely once they are out of warranty.
They are very nice cars while they last though.

Sorry you weren't getting such a low gas mileage. I just bought a certified 2014 Lexus ES300h at Lexus Escondido and am getting about 36-38 mpg. We drive mostly on the highway with a good mix of elevation.
Congrats on your new ride though!

I think the British taught them how to do that.

Mercedes depreciation is brutal too. they really drop like a stone. i'm shocked at how cheaply you can get a few years old used SL that originally listed for $100K+ MSRP. there's a reason for that - there's no free lunch. the cost to own gets really brutal after the first few years - especially out of warranty - people lease them or buy them then dump them. nobody wants to deal with it. no thanks i don't need that kind of stress in my life.

The data show number of problems per 100 vehicles.
What is missing is how much $ to fix 1 average problem per brand.
Porsche and Mercedes may make their way down toward the bottom with that data.

What's interesting is Lexus is right up there with the best of them in that regard. A Lexus power steering pump for my old LS400 was $400, an aftermarket pump was $150. Porsche is much the same way for parts cost but is much less repair friendly, several additional complicated and time consuming steps will be required to accomplish the same repair. Its 10 steps and almost ten minutes just to gain access to the motor in my Porsche, albeit a mid engine vehicle. From what I've been told British cars are some of the most mechanic freindly cars ever made, go figure.

To do anything is like peeling an onion, and very expensive. Changing the spark plugs, for example, but at least you don't have to take the motor out,in order to do that, ala Ferrari.

How 'bout the costs of having a Lexus serviced/repaired at a Toyota dealer? Can they do everything and do they charge Toyota prices when the do and are Toyota prices significantly lower than Lexus prices?
Just wonder'n
