The tax part varies by state, but it's no different than trading in a financed car that still has a balance owed on it.

This is how I've ended all of my leases thus far.
Please forgive my ignorance (or stupidity whatever the case), but does this mean if hypothetically I have a residual of 30k on an excellent-condition vehicle, the trade-in is appraised at that 30k value and I want to purchase a new Lexus at 40k I only need to pay 10k for the new one?
It sounds like almost too good of a scenario but is certainly worth considering when my lease ends in May.

No, if your residual is $30k and your trade in is $30k, you break even and pay $40k for your new one. In this example you simply have the choice of doing a lease return or skipping the hassle of inspection, fees, and mileage hits with a trade in.

If the residual were $30k but trade in was $35k, you could do a trade and pocket the $5k.

It would be the same as trading in a financed car where you owe $30k. A $30k trade value would break even.

The only time it really makes sense to return rather than trade a leased car is if you are not getting another or if the trade in value is less than the residual.

Hope me that makes sense.

The latest news is that the 2018 Lexus ES 350 will be introduced April 20 at the Shanghai Auto Show. Details to be released, with complete Lexus new model specifications released in mid-summer 2017.

Ok now I'm excited but can you confirm where you got this news from?

Refer back to post #1 in this thread where I posted a link. The information is not verified and is all conjecture at this point.

The Shanghai auto show is April 20, 2017, not in June. I got my information from the April 20, 2015 Shanghai auto show when the 2016 Lexus ES 350 was first shown. There is a very good chance that the 2018 ES 350 will be released at that time.
If you Google the 2015 Shanghai Auto show/Lexus ES 350, you will see the first photos of the new body.

That web site is showing you the new 2016 Lexus es350. Not the 2018... To the best of my knowledge there are NO photos of a 2018 and everything stated and shown is pure conjecture at this point.

Agreed.
Lets all watch the web on April 20, 2017 and see if we get to view the 2018 ES 350. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!

I'm anxious to see and if it's substantially changed I'll trade in my 2013...

That article is actually still based on a rumor that was proven to be untrue. The next gen GS has a chassis and development code, so it appears there will in fact be a next generation GS.

I tried to see if any photos were published for the 2018 ES 350/300h but couldn't find any online. Tried the NY International Auto Show as well as the Shanghai Auto Show but no luck.
If anyone sees any please put them up on the forum.

Seems this is only info I've found from the show. I was also hoping to hear if any changes were coming to 2018 ES.

ES is due for a model change in the first half of next year, if the 6 year model cycle continues.
Plus ES shares platforms with Camry and stretched wheelbase Avalon, and next Camry is released late this year.
Will be interesting to see what 7th gen ES brings, including direct injection and 8 speed auto from 4GS, onto Toyota Highlander, and then onto 2018 Camry.
2018 Camry styling isn't good to my eyes, so it will be interesting what 2018 7ES styling brings; hope it's not something too whacko...
