Default Engine in 2013 ES 300h

Needing assistance. Looking to purchase a ES300h. The engine is hydro locked. Engine needs replacement. Question is the engine the same as the Camry 2.5 in its hybrid system or is there a engine code specific to the ES300h? Thank you!

I believe it is the same as the gas engine in the Camry hybrid but that is just based on reading reviews and visiting with sales people. I have no specific information that would confirm that. I believe there are others on this forum that could verify that fact with supportable data.

I think you're answering your own question.

The ES300h has a 3.0L V6, but from your post looks like you're speaking knowledgeably of the Camry with a 2.5L (4 cylinder?)

So, it would not be the same.

The ES300h has a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder, not a 3.0 V6.

Yup. Our ES300h has a 2.5 liter gas engine. Purportedly the same drivetrain as the Camry. I believe the Highlander used to share that drivetrain but I don't know if that has remained the case as the vehicle has grown in size. Our NX300h also shares that drivetrain with Toyota's 2.5 Liter gas engine. It is virtually identical to the ES300h under the hood, but the AWD versions add a separate electric motor for the rear wheels.

The Highlander Hybrid has always been a V6.

Oh wow. I stand corrected!

So the sales guy who wanted us to test drive a hybrid (we weren't interested), got his figures wrong. I never questioned him and equally assumed the 300h badge was how Lexus has always identified their motors (ES250=2.5L, LS400=4.0L, etc) I guess Lexus even fooled the (used car) sales guy AND me.

For hybrids, that has not been the case. For hybrids, a 300 number is meant to indicate an approximation of what displacement in an internal combustion engine would be needed to produce the same horsepower that the hybrid system produces. So, in the case of the ES300h, they are saying that it would take about a 3 liter ICE to produce the same 200 hp that the ES300h produces. For the GS450h, the 450 indicates an estimate that a 4.5 liter ICE would put out the same horsepower as the GS450h hybrid system puts out.

Keep in mind, the less you actually know about automobiles, the more qualified you are to be a used car salesman. After all, why let facts or honesty stand in the way of a sale?

To the OP, while a Camry, RAV4, or NX300h all have the 2.5L I-4 hybrid drivetrain, the one I'd lay my money on being a direct drop in is the one out of the Avalon hybrid. The Toyota Avalon and Lexus ES are essentially the same car.

Best of luck.

Your information is inaccurate. The first Highlander we test drove had a 4 cylinder engine. We found it to be a bit underpowered and then drove a limited model which had among other things, a V6. That was essentially when we found our first RX, discovering that for just a few thousand $$ more we could move up to the RX which also had a V6 and took options to the next level over the Highlander Limited.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/autos/toyot...004/sd-AAbLST8

The Highlander 4 of that generation only had a displacement of 2.4 liters so it wasn't the same engine as the current ES Hybrid/NX Hybrid/Camry/Avalon Hybrid, etc...

EDIT/CORRECTION: My apologies. I can't speak for the Highlander Hybrid as you were referring to. I was talking about the standard Highlander.

CT200h has the 1.8L 4 cyl (same as Prius) MPG ratings similar to Prius V
HS250h had a 2.4L 4 cyl MPG "only" 35 city while 400 lb heavier ES300h gets 40 !
ES300h has the 2.5L cyl (same as NX300h/Avalon and Camry)
GS450h has 3.5L V6 (338 HP vs 311 for gas GS350 and 31 vs 22 combined MPG!)
LS600h has a 5.0L V8 recall that the LS460 has "only" a 4.6L V8
RX450h has 3.5L V6 with 308HP vs gas RX350's 295 (0-60 in 7.7 vs gas 7.9)
NX300h has the 2.5L 4 cyl

The CT, HS, ES, RX and NX Hybrids use Regular Grade Fuel

Indeed, there has been, and still is a 4 cylinder offering in the Highlander, but the hybrid versions of the Highlander have always been V6.

As I previously acknowledged, I didn't know Lexus played number games with all their hybrid models. Moreover, a sales guy let me to believe, while shopping the last 3 weeks for a 2014 ES, the hybrid had a 3.0L V6. He insisted we test drive one too. We weren't interested and didn't discuss hybrids any further.

You're a day late to the party btw. Although there's always that someone who feels bigger & better to kick the guy even after an apology. Thanks for your ridicule though.
