Default How Much Should An Oil Change Cost

I usually get my oil changed at the dealer for about $40, but didn't want to make the trip and went over to my local wash & lube. They quoted me $106. Does that sound right?

You did not mention your specific vehicle but if it's a late model Lexus, it most likely requires 0w20 synthetic. $40 is a very good deal but I would confirm they are using the correct oil - sounds like they could possibly be using bulk oil of some type. Is this a Lexus or Toyota dealer? I'm not familiar with "wash & lube" so unable to comment on that.

If you're paying $40.00 for a quality synthetic oil change please send me the address. I'd make sure as BG stated, that they're using name brand quality 0w20 synthetic for your car.
Otherwise, an oil change for a newer Lexus can range from about $50.00 on a special offer to about $100.00 at the Lexus dealer. My dealer charges $75.00 for a 2013 Lexus using 0w20 synthetic and a Lexus filter cartridge. Your wash and lube doesn't sound like such a good deal to me. my local AAA garage gets $70.00.

This is the 6th Gen ES Forum, didn't think I'd need to specify, but I probably should put it in my signature.

As mentioned below, it was at Ray Catena Lexus in NJ.

Wash & Lube was just my reference to a generic local quick lube shop.

$40 was at Ray Catena Lexus in NJ, where I got the car. But it costs me time, tolls and gas to get there.

$70-80 sounds fair, $106 sounds out of line. They tried to tell me it has a special oil filter. I just left.

Thanks to both of you for the responses.

$40 would be a steal for synthetic with a filter. Almost what a DIY would run you.

Sorry - sometimes folks with other model and year vehicles mistakenly post in the wrong forum - was just trying to confirm. As others have said, 40 bucks is indeed a great price if they are using a quality 0w20 synthetic oil. Most Lexus dealers charge $100 or more. Something to consider, if you can locate a dependable independent auto service shop near you, they could do the work for a reasonable amount if you provide the oil and filter. Walmart has Mobil 1 Extended Performace in 5 quart containers for around $30 incl tax, and you could hopefully source the filter locally or online. The ES350 requires 6.6 quarts so you could just buy a couple extra quarts or two 5 quart jugs and save the left over toward the next change. The shop we have been using for years does great work and charges 10 bucks if we provide the oil and filter.

$40 isn't a synthetic oil change. Dealers all the time will use low quality oil, non synthetic oil, etc. If the dealer is using good quality oil, they loose money on a $40 oil change.

$40 is a steal if they are using a quality synthetic oil. I get my oil changed for no labor at a friends shop where I worked before. However, if I remember correctly, the 0W20 synth oil costs over $40 per gallon at shop prices... The Lexus OEM filter was about $5 (cheap) from a dealer. For the RX 350 you need a special tool to remove the filter. I'd guess $65 or so would not be out of line including labor. I would be leery of any of those quick oil change places, including Walmart. I've had bad experiences with those types of business before. They are not all bad or crooked, but enough of them are that or incompetent. They can screw up your car.

I take my oil filter bought at Lexus Parts World for $5 and 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 purchased at Walmart for $24 to my local Toyota dealer and they charge me $15 labor for the oil change labor. Total cost $44.

I think the hybrid takes just under 5 qts.

Oil capacity (Drain and refill  reference*)
With filter
 Gasoline vehicles 6.4 qt. (6.1 L, 5.4 Imp.qt.)
 Hybrid vehicles 4.6 qt. (4.4 L, 3.9 Imp.qt.)
Without filter
 Gasoline vehicles 6.0 qt. (5.7 L, 5.0 Imp.qt.)
 Hybrid vehicles 4.2 qt. (4.0 L, 3.5 Imp.qt.)

I've been getting the oil changes for my ES 350 at the local Toyota dealer. Their "regular" price, using the same Toyota full synthetic oil and filter that the Lexus dealer would use is about $70. But they have "loyal customer" pricing for regular customers, and the "loyal customer" price for the full synthetic oil change is $51. When I had my last oil change several weeks ago, I also had a $10 coupon. So, my net cost was $41. I figure that, at that price, it would cost me more to do it myself.

I'd be dubious as to whether they actually use the Toyota synthetic oil...

I've checked the labeling on the oil packaging, and it is clearly marked as genuine Toyota full synthetic oil.

I suspect that their marketing strategy is to do oil changes for somewhere around their cost to encourage customers to have other service and repair work done in their shop. And what they charge for other work is also quite reasonable at prices less than half of what the Lexus dealer charges. I've been having all of my work on my Lexus vehicles done there for about a dozen years, and they do now have a loyal customer.
