Anybody purchased the trunk stainless steel edge for the rear bottom of the trunk (just under the license plate)? I just installed mine and really like the look. It also is functional as I have a black car and the edge gives me a place to close the trunk without leaving fingerprints on the trunk. I will post a picture when I get the chance.

I am among those who don't like the look of chrome on a vehicle, but I'm old enough to remember the cars of the 1960s and 1970s, when cars were designed with an excess of chrome trim, and I associate chrome with being gaudy. Thus, I prefer an understated look with body-colored trim. I'm sure that this is also the reason why I dislike the look of the front end of the refreshed 2016 ES

I do agree, though, about it not being good practice to close the trunk (or doors) by placing your hands on the painted sheet metal. Not only does that put fingerprints on the car, but, especially with dark colors, the friction between you fingers and any dust on the surface of the vehicle will put fine scratches in the finish; however, you don't need to add chrome trim on the trunk edge to be able to avoid having to put your hand on the painted surfaces when closing the trunk. I'm in the habit of placing my fingers on the rear license plate when closing the trunk, and doing so eliminates any problems related to putting fingerprints or fine scratches in the finish.

How about just using the handle grip inside the trunk lid? Then you don't touch the outside surface at all...

It's funny that you should mention the grip inside the trunk lid. I recall when I was checking out the Generation 6 ES for the first time. After I opened the trunk to check out how much room it had, because of my aversion to placing my hands on sheet metal, I took a moment to look for a spot where I could place my fingers without touching the sheet metal. When the salesman saw me doing that, he pointed out to me the handle inside the trunk.

When I subsequently bought the ES, for the first couple of months, I used that grip to close the trunk, but I subsequently concluded that, when using it, it felt somewhat awkward to be reaching inside the trunk, and it required using a bit more force to make the trunk travel completely to the closed position after releasing my hand from the handle inside the trunk. That was when I realized that the license plate provided a large and convenient location on which I could place 2 or 3 fingers to close the trunk, and, by using the license plate, I could close the trunk more gently and with less force than what is required when using the handle inside the trunk. So, it was my conclusion that the license plate provided a more ergonomic "assist handle" than the one that Lexus had designed.

A bit off topic but I wished the ES didn't have chrome window trim. The stuff scratches easily and looks a bit gaudy, especially on lighter colored cars. I'd prefer either matte black or piano black window trim instead.

Bob, you took the words right out of my mouth. In fact, if you look at the suggested links in the other posts on chrome handles and lower body trim, they're mostly from eBay. And yes, most are from China.
