I am anxiously waiting for someone to report on the new Lexus "No Haggle" pricing being test marketed around the country. The local newspaper reports it is being tested at the Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska dealers. Here is a link.

Apparently this USA Today article is from almost a year ago. There were some posts regarding this experiment months ago but none, to my knowledge, recently. I, for one, hope that it fails. Even if it becomes partially successful there will be, in my opinion, cheaters that offer other incentives such as equipment, service specials, etc. to gain the edge and make the sale.

On the other hand, this is the way cars are sold in other countries such as in Europe, Australia, and the U.K. In advertisements the price is given as "out the door".

There is a thread on this program over on the Car Chat forum. Post #346 has an article with an update on the Omaha dealership.

While it may be possible for a dealership to stick to its "no haggle" price with regard to the nominal selling price of the vehicle itself, there are many other negotiable items involved in the sale of a new vehicle. Dealers are more likely to make the major portion of their profits on things like selling the buyer an extended warranty, selling the buyer other add-ons, the value assigned to a trade-in, financing, lease terms, etc. than they are to make the major portion of the profits on the nominal selling price of the car because the majority of car buyers are more savvy about the pricing of the car itself than they are about the pricing of all of the other items, and car dealers can make their best total profit by offering what looks like a great price for the vehicle itself and padding their profits on the other items for which buyers don't even realize that they are likely to be overpaying.

While it may be possible to set up "no haggle" pricing for some of these items, it would be much more difficult to do so for others. If, for example, a dealer offers me Blue Book value for a trade in that is in virtually perfect condition, has low miles, and has been properly maintained, I would certainly want to be able to negotiate what was offered me for the trade-in, and, if I couldn't get an offer for the trade-in that was in keeping with the car's true value, I certainly wouldn't be buying a new car from that dealership. Similarly, if I was (foolishly) interested in buying an extended warranty and if I couldn't negotiate a price for that warranty was lower than the advertised price, which is likely to have been marked up by several hundred percent, I certainly wouldn't be buying a car from that dealership. The bottom line is that it is unlikely that there would ever be true "no haggle" pricing, and, with all of the other items that factor into the bottom line, those who think that there is nothing to negotiate are likely to be paying more than they need to for a car.

I really did not look at that. but I have Vin # 58ABK1GGXGU026785 . Not sure that helps. How do I know where they build? Sure I can trade 18" with you, where you located?

Where it's built has no bearing on what is or isn't a good deal.

This car is built in the US because the VIN starts with "5". Japan built cars have VINs that start with "J"
