Default Fuel Empty Sign

for ES 350 2016, at what point you get Empty Sign? In other words, at the first display of Empty Sign, how much fuel is still in the tank?

IIRC, I see the gas tank symbol with around 40 miles remaining. That's going off of the calculated miles remaining. When that reaches 0, I still have around 2 gallons left. This is not something I regularly do, but have more than once.

I don't have the sign come on very often but it happened just last week and I believe it had at least 3 gallons left in the tank - enough to cover quite a few miles.

Gas light came on last week for the 1st time. Filled up and took 15 gallons which I thought was odd until I reallized that the Lexus ES350 only holds 17.2 gallons compared to my Acura that has a 18.5 gallon capacity. Gotta get used to the smaller tank of the Lexus.

Yeah it's a bit of a surprise, because the last gen ES had an 18.5 gallon tank. I guess they thought that with the better MPG, they could shrink the tank a bit and still have the same range. I start getting antsy with 1/4 tank left, even though I know the warning light is very conservative.

It is generally not a good idea to let the gas tank be empty. The fuel pump motor is submerged in gasoline and that is what cools it. The fuel pump runs hotter when the tank is near empty and presumably that shortens its life.

I've also heard, since I was a kid, that sediment rests on the bottom of the tank and could be sucked into the pump at low levels causing damage.
