being an old hotrodder, i'm curious how you can have an engine with 10.8 compression ratio and still burn regular fuel. does the computer regulate timing to deter knock or what? if so would performance/fuel economy benefit with premium fuel?

Yup. High tech ignition timing control and variable valve timing. Us old folks who grew up on coils, distributors, and distributor points, and cams are like dinosaurs. It is kind of depressing but nice not to have to change points and plugs every 3000 miles.
