I have a feeling the "fix" is to somehow retrofit the 2016 version of the system into the 2015 and earlier vehicles. The service manager saying its an involved fix leads me to believe they have to replace parts, maybe the sensor, some wiring, possibly even interior display(s) etc.

It seems like the know the 2016 system is "good" so I think it would make more sense to re-use that one than come up with yet-another-different version.

If past practice is any indication, the warning label will be large, yellow, conspicuous, and very ugly. And it will be permanent -- such that any attempt to remove it will damage whatever surface is behind it.

You don't have to let them disable it if you don't want. The service rep actually suggested that I skip the procedure.

I also asked my Dealer to not disable PCS on my 2 ES and they complied.

The hang tag for the interim remedy was similar to the tag that comes on the car talking about airbags (usually hanging on the glove compartment). The location of the tag is the left knee bolster area next to the steering wheel. Its bright and annoying but Im sure thats on purpose.

So I just spoke to my service advisor. They dont have the parts yet but he made it a priority order so they get there as soon as possible.

The fix takes about 2 hours and involves replacing one sensor and one module. I didnt ask outright if its an upgrade to the 2016 system but once they call me back to schedule I will.

This is from the Toyota Avalon Recall Fix document, I assume it would be about the same for the ES.

I was looking online to see if the part numbers matched the 2016 models but it seems parts for the 2016's have not been loaded into dealers online sites yet.

I noticed the same.

Some of the sites dont even go past 2013 or 2014! Seems odd.

What a PITA!!!!

Thats an awful lot going into the calibration, etc. Have to have a lot of faith in the service dept. getting it right.

I wonder if there is a way to verify its working correctly....might have to try running into a cardboard box or something.

I don't think it is a lot of work for the install, just very detailed instructions...but I'm quite sure the ECU and radar were not intended to ever need replacing! Ha! At least they can be.

I like the one "STOP" comment on p15, "To prevent poor appearance ensure the wires are wrapped in black electrical tape." Yep, Lexus even cares about how your engine compartment looks!

I'm not surprised at the calibration. I wondered if it would be complicated. Marketing makes all this tech seem simply. All this "hands off" of cars these days takes an incredible amount of sensors and software processing (I'm a software engineer, but not in the car industry). I still think cars need visual plus radar to process properly. I suspect that's what the auto-driving cars use. Using just one or the other seems a difficult data set to chew on.

Oh well, thanks for the PDF link. Fun read. I might have to take a before and after picture if I remember. See how well they wired things up in the engine compartment according to the pictures. Heh.

I'm still waiting as well. Service rep says the parts are trickling in, and they are fixing all the new cars that have been grounded by the recall first, before starting on the ones that were already sold. Said prob 1-2 months before I'll be able to get it fixed.
