Default Hey!

Hey everyone! Long time reader, first time post! I recently purchased an ES300h. I previously had a CT200h. I'm loving the extra room but haven't yet achieved the mpg. In my CT, it seemed I'd always get if not exceed the manufacturers mpg. I was looking at the ESh or GSh but decided on the ESh because of the mileage and low maintenance costs but so far no luck on the mpg!?!?!?

One month ago I purchased a 2013 ES300h. In 1,500 miles of which has been 70% city and 30% highway, I am averaging 38 mpg. Just got back today from a 500 miles trip of which 90% was highway and averaged 40.5. This is in regular mode. If your car is new it will need some break-in period. Max mpg could take 1,000-2,000 miles to achieve. Make sure your tires are cold at least 34 psi. If used check your air filter and I highly recommend Mobil 1 0-20. You can buy a 5 quart jug at Walmart for $24. I recently took my oil and a Toyota filter to my local Toyota dealership and they charged me $15 labor for the oil change.

Hi there! If you're coming from the CT, the ES300h needs a bit of babying to get high mpg. I've gotten as high as 50 mpg on my commute but that's with using pulse and glide on city roads, cruise control on highways, being lucky with traffic and having a gentle right foot. The same Prius or CT hypermiling techniques can also be used on the ES. I use Eco or Normal modes for better control of the EV/ICE transition, Sport mode is fun for jack rabbit starts but the throttle response is too abrupt for efficient driving.

You really can't compare those two cars (I've also had both), as they are entirely different despite both being hybrids. If you drive the ES300h like a "regular car". and are not a maniac or boy-racer with it, you should be able, like me, to average 37-42 mpg using Sport mode 80% of the time. It will also be dependent on weather conditions, neither super hot nor super cold outside. In contrast, we averaged about 42-46 mpg with the CT200h, a much smaller and lighter car with less performance.

We leave ours in Eco mode and have averaged about 39.5 since late February. We have been as low as 38.5 and as high as 40.9. The dash is usually reading about half an MPG higher than calculated mileage. We have previously owned two different Priuses, so we are pretty used to the techniques used to stretch the mileage. If we just put in normal mode and drive it without trying to maximize the time on battery, I doubt we would ever get over 37 MPG. Aside from the break-in period already discussed, you want to adjust your driving to maximize the time you spend on battery, but be careful not to be a nuisance to the surrounding traffic. There is nothing more annoying than getting behind some jerk trying to maximize his/her mileage at the expense of the following traffic.

I'm getting around 37-38 which isn't bad but I do notice the electric motor is a little sluggish compared to the CT but that's probably because of the size. I know I probably could achieve more by not using the ac so often and using some other techniques. Overall, I do like the car. Especially the added oomph and room

We get 38-43 depending on how we are driving. My wife and I both cant do the ECO mode, we tried but we found maybe we are too heavy on the pedal. Normal mode is where we tend to do our best. I'll have to look up the hypermiling techniques chromedome mentioned. Trying to achieve higher mileage is like an addiction. Doh this post caused it to drop .1 mpg lol

Are you not contradicting yourself with "sluggish" vs. "added oomph". At any rate, having had both, I found the ES300h to be much better as far as pick-up and performance.

Interesting since the 0-60 for the ES is also faster than the CT.

Not really a contradiction but I was able to easily take off and maintain with just electric in the CT but it's too much of a pain in the ES. As for the oomph, it is a noticeable difference in performance (Eco and normal)

Oh yeah, it was either an ESh or GSh. I went with the ESh because of the low maintance and better fuel economy
