just comparing the base models - which of the two is safer?

Is the construction of lexus any different than camry (i.e. extra support bars, more stiffer metal used in construction, stronger body chasis, better airbags, more effective crumple zones?? )

2013 and 2014 Lexus and camry are different body styles so many differences. Lexus and avalon are structurally identical as far as I know.

The NHTSA gives them both a 5 star overall safety rating.

yep 2013 ES is based on the avalon platform, and no longer the camry like previous gens.
