I own a 2013 Lexus ES 350. 7800 miles.

Yesterday after refueling, I went through my regular routine to reset the odometer readings, avg speed, etc.

After leaving the gas bay, I checked the tire pressure display and noticed all the readings showing blank dashes (----). I proceeded from the gas station and rechecked the pressure display again and all the readings were now at their regular readings (40 psig).

I have checked the tire pressure display since and everything is normal.

What caused the display to read/display the dashes (----)?

It takes some time to initialize. showing --- for first couple of seconds is normal it seems. However, 40psi seems a bit high to me. Recommended psi is 33.

This is just a guess, but it is one that seems logical to me.

In the same way that, upon start up with a computer, it goes through a long list of scheduled checks and housekeeping tasks, so does your vehicle's computer. The list of start up tasks is not the same every time you start the vehicle. Some checks are done only periodically. Thus, my guess would be that, when you got the blank display for tire pressure, the computer on the ES was busy with a longer list of other scheduled tasks and that reading and displaying the tire pressure was lower on the list of priorities for the computer to complete. I would think that it would be normal for the tire pressures to take longer to display when the vehicle's computer had more other tasks to complete and that, as long as they displayed properly in a relatively short amount of time, there is nothing about which to be concerned.

I had my '14ES do that once after I dropped the pressure in all 4 tires from 37 to 33 psi. I was on a short test drive and shut off the engine to do the air pressure change, maybe 5 minutes max. No resets were done. When I restarted the car all the pressure readings were ---- but after driving a half mile they all showed up again reading 33 psi. Not sure if the sudden multiple pressure drops caused the TPMS to get confused or if it was something else. It has never done it since.

I agree with the startup explanations. When I took delivery my tires were close to 40 and the ride was quite harsh which is what got my attention. Adjusting the pressures to 33 made quite an improvement in ride quality.
