Default Checking the doors are closed

I suspect that this will cause a smile or two but it just kind of bugs me

My ES 300h is the first I have had with keyless entry/lock. When I lock the doors (touch the door) I hear the doors lock - but there's this little bell in my head that wants to KNOW that it's locked. With my previous car I used to lock then tug on a door just to make sure. I can't do that any more - because I have my key in my pocket so the car happily opens I'm guessing there's no way around this but thought I'd ask.

Also, is there a way to lock the doors such that they remain locked after a passenger has got out? I THINK I have to wait for the last passenger to get out and close their door before I can lock the car, which with my slow family is a pain Do I need to wait?

Thanks.

Mark

Anyone? Does everyone wait for the last passenger to get out their door and close it before they can lock the doors?

Yep.

Once I hear the chime and the lights flash I know they're locked.

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, let's take the Mother-In-Law scenario. She's in the back seat and take a lot longer to get out than me, the driver. So...

On all previous cars, I can get out and as soon as she OPENS her door I can lock the car, safe in the knowledge that when she closes her door the car is locked. Thus, I can walk away from the car - and be away from the Mother-In-Law - as soon as she opens her door.

On my ES 300h I need to wait for her to CLOSE her door (takes a while!). I think I am right in saying that if I try to lock the car before that then it just beeps (and the door is not locked).

Or maybe I am mistaken.

Thanks.

^^^^You are indeed correct. You can not lock the doors until all doors are closed. If you try you will get an unpleasant warning tone. So, stick a pin in MIL's butt

Or better yet... go around and help the poor woman out of the car.

My son is always the last one out of the car. I just lock the doors with the remote after he closes his door. I guess teenagers and grandmothers do have something in common!!! LOL

Okay, here's the deal.

Everybody has opened their door.

Hit the lock button on the door.

Once everybody closes their door, the car remains locked.

Problem is... you're back to square one not knowing if the doors are locked. No sound/lights.

Get far enough away from the car with the key and the last person out can verify the locked car.

Holy you know what - why so complicated? Just use the key fob - just takes one click, right?

I lock my drivers door, as I open it, then close it.
if I tug on the outside door handle shortly after locking it does not open. but, pull the handle 2x and it does unlock.

-my pet peeve is I often open the door before the car is off, and I get a beep.
but this beeping (door open) does not stop once the power is off.

-since I have a house alarm, I am in a hurry to drive into the garage, and get out to reach the alarm keypad before the alarm warning window expires...

overall, I'm still not a fan of smart keys.

Yup. Once you are used to it. Press the fob and walk away......

^^^^The whole point of SmartKey is so that can leave the keys in your pocket (or the SmartCard in your wallet). Much less fumbling around. I have keyless entry on the truck, and the SmartCard is a big step up. Why would you want to go back to a fob

Understood Lou - probably not a problem using the smart key when alone or maybe with one passenger who gets out of car quickly but it sounds like Mark is experiencing an issue with multiple passengers and/or passenger/s who are departing the car slower than expected. This is just my opinion - if I was faced with this situation, I'd just hit that lock button on the key fob and be done with it. Again - just my opinion - seems simple enough.

My wife's CR-V (no smart key) acts the same way. All the doors need to be closed before you can lock the car with the FOB. I guess I'm just kind of used to it now. It irritated me at first.

Sounds like a little patience is in order. Perhaps slowing down a bit and having to wait to lock the door might be a good thing
