Why didn't Avalon and ES just switch badges ?
I think Lexus and Toyota got it all wrong. They made the Avalon really premium which is a huge jump from the last generation and toned down the Lexus. I really love the exterior design more of Avalon than the ES. It seems so right. Even the interiors of the Avalon seems more premium than the ES with better stitched dashboard and design.
I know majority of you here are ES fans and I'm a Lexus owner too , so don't flame me. But I just can't get it, why they ( Toyota / Lexus ) didn't just switch badges ? Here are pics for comparison sake.

It still looks like a... Toyota.
I've had both and if I'm spending big money for a car it isn't going to have a Toyota badge on the trunk.
Just a quick look at the steering wheels should make up your mind.

I traded an Avalon for a 2013 ES. They are both sweet rides. The Avalon and the Lexus are both finished off to a very high standard. I think it's a matter of choice; The Avalon was really upgraded for 2013 to the extent that it is a close match to the Lexus. However the badge still says Toyota and to some this is a negative as compared to the Lexus "L". I would buy another Avalon.

The Avalon and ES are so close to each other that IMO it's strictly a matter of personal preference, and maybe a few hundred bucks.
Consumer Reports recently did a road test on the Avalon and their comments were pretty similar to their comments on the ES a few months ago.
FWIW the Avalon gas and hybrid models were rated a few points higher than the ES counterparts. The differences weren't too great though.

I test drove both prior to selecting the ES. IMHO the Lexus interior was a bit nicer. While many prefer the Lexus badge, overall support in terms of warranty and dealer support also favors Lexus.

One thing I noticed when buying my ES is that the quality of the service department and showroom was a whole lot better than the average brand. I've heard of at least one Lexus dealer that has a spa at the service department. Small things like that are an added advantage of buying a premium brand vehicle.

This picture comparison only reconfirms that I made the right choice in picking the Lexus over Toyota....but that is just my opinion. There isn't one thing that I see here that I like better.....maybe price....I have not idea what the Avalon sells for.

I test drove both
Taking the looks of the vehicle out of it I can tell you the ES drive is far superior to the Avalon, forget the fancy gadgets of the Avalon and just drive the car. The ES is much quieter, when you run over bumps they feel nice and squishy in the ES while the Avalon hits them with more of a thud. Look and feel the interior and how tight things are, nothing to rattle down the road. It is a better built vehicle with a better suspension. The one downfall I noticed was the ventilated seats are much cooler in the Avalon. *shrug* my 0.2 cents.
