So you are saying they can't update software to mute navigation when call comes in ? Weird.

I'm no software engineer but I find it hard to believe that updated software can't change the functionality. All they would probably have to do is use the software coding from the CT or whatever other Lexus that already has the function and put that coding into the ES firmware.

But how do you download the new software coding to the car?

I've been a Lexus owner for 15 years, never seen them do anything like that.

You're also assuming the CT does that because its designed to, I think it's more likely that's a side effect of some other difference between the CT and the ES. Why would they intentionally engineer such a function into one model and not the other? It's cheaper to have the same system in every model.

With the cars becoming more and more software/electronics based... I find it hard to digest that they would lock it up so it can't be re-written. All the controllers coming out nowadays pretty much have this ability to upgrade.

Steve, I'll take you word for it since you have more experience with Lexus. Really sad if it's true.

Whats your thoughts on this...

Canadian version have Enform minus the apps. Do you think these are upgradeable if let's say I brought my ES to U.S and asked a lexus dealer to reinstall my enform apps as they got corrupted (LOL)

It can be done, but likely would require replacement of the entire audio/navigation unit. You can't just reinstall something like you can on a computer.

It's not a Lexus thing, it's just not like updating the drivers on your computer. Think of it as downloading software to your audio receiver in your home stereo...there's no physical way to do that.

Sorry Steve, my audio receiver downloads firmware updates all the time and can do it direct via Ethernet or USB.

While Lexus more often updates the Points of interest and map data, they do sometimes also tweak the coding of the nav software. Examples of this is the removal of the "I agree" prompt requirement and also removal of the back door nav override. Not saying there is a lot of hope for this to get addressed, but it certainly is possible.

But I think your audio receiver is likely way more sophisticated than what Lexus is using, quite frankly.

In some ways probably. But there is concrete proof Lexus does do coding changes to the UI as I mentioned above so I'll stand by my thought that this is not an insurmountable technical challenge to fix if they want to do it.

I agree with Dave. As he said, it's technically possible, but are they likely to make those changes? Don't hold your breath.

Update: I called the service department of a different Lexus dealership to lodge a complaint and the guy said "Lexus is aware of this issue and it effects all 2013 models with this navigation system." He said they are working on it, but has no idea when a fix would come, but "lots of people" have complained about it.

So my suggestion is to call all Lexus service departments in your area and a lodge a complaint. It takes about 10 minutes to make one of these calls, and well worth it if we keep the pressure up and they log enough complaints. The more complaints, the more they will realize this is not only a convenience problem, but a safety issue as you are fumbling around to get to settings to turn it off while driving and talking on the phone.

I actually wouldn't call the dealer, I would call Lexus at 1-800-25-LEXUS or submit a complaint online. You always take the risk that the dealer won't forward your complaint to Lexus.

Call Lexus directly. I've never had much luck with dealers forwarding complaints. I bet they got complaints in the past from customers who missed turns during calls and that's why they removed it for these new systems.

Good news. My dealer said that they made a fix for the phone/navigation prompts issue on the GS 2013 model.

More than ever call Lexus and make sure they are making a fix for the ES model!

1-800-25-LEXUS

Call today and lets get this fixed!!!
