That's a smart way to do it!!

You are absolutely right. My point, though, is that it is clear that many of the people posting here are not looking at the full deal and are only paying attention to one aspect of it, most likely the price relative to MSRP or invoice. I can pick out a good number of deals posted in this thread where, on the surface, it would appear that the buyer got a fantastic deal, but for which I'm quite confident that the dealer found significant ways not mentioned in the posts to pad its profits, and it is likely that the buyer paid little attention to that profit padding. I'm also confident that a good number of what appear to be great deals were ones that, when all things are considered, were worse deals than some that appear, at first glance, not to be very good deals.

Going along with what you have said, when comparing deals, you need to be comparing apples to apples, and, without looking at lease terms, finance terms, dealer installed options, purchases of extended warranties, trade-in terms, etc., the only meaningful comparisons are ones where the vehicle was bought in a straight cash deal without a trade-in and not ones where the vehicle was leased or financed or where the buyer bought extended warranties, dealer installed options, etc. Since most people posting have not posted the full set of details for their deals, any comparisons made between those deals have limited value, and it is likely that many of those deals were, all things considered, not as sweet as they might seem to have been at first glance.

I met with the dealer 1 week before the purchase and the cash price was $ 39,486.00. At that time, I did not mention I was planning on trading in a car. I tried to squeeze 15% off MSRP on the 1st meet but 13% was the highest I could get for the car. To compensate the dealer threw in all-weather floor mats and door edge guards for free which is another $ 200.00 and also received a $ 50.00 parts/service voucher.

MSRP: $ 45,184 for Luxury Package
INVOICE: $ 42,486
PAID: $ 39,486 . Cash purchase.

That's great, why does edmunds show that a great deal is around $2500 off MSRP? Same with all the other Internet pricing tools. Just wondering where is the disconnect? If the Internet convinces most people that $2500 off is a great deal why would any dealer give anyone 2x that amount off on a hot selling car? Just trying to understand???

Glad you like your deal and your car but you sound like a mean spirited person trying to make this other member feel bad about the deal he got on his car!
I really wasn't... Sorry if it came off that way.

EnigmaXM..... I've always thought a "good deal" is one you're happy with... having said that the deal you made is almost identical to the deal I made on my car in January... sticker was 45186, we paid 39,186. as for Lexus trade in, I was trading an 07 Avalon with 81K miles on it... Lexus originally offered me around 9K..... Cadillac offered me 11,500 and Lexus matched it. Don't recall the exact Kelly blue book value on my avalon, but I believe 11,500 was more than KBB. Congratulations on the new car...

Why pay cash? Even with low interest, at the rate the Federal Reserve is printing fiat currency every month, putting that cash into something that is inflation proof might have been a wiser choice?

As long as you don't take NO, for an answer.

The discounts members are getting are all over the place. From around $2100 - $6000?? I don't have a problem with the dealer making a profit, that's why they are in business. I just want to know from a % off the manufactures MSRP, no dealer add on's, etc. what is a fair price? Is it 90% of MSRP not including transportation? If I know the correct amount to offer its easy to not take no for an answer. I also being located in Austin Texas, can not only then shop the Austin dealer but also San Antonio, Houston, and Dallas. Thanks in advance for any advise.

Location has the most to do with what percentage off people are getting. I would say between 9 and 10% off MSRP on a 2014 would be a good deal, on average. The best deals seem to come from California. That said, this is your decision to make. I got mine for about 7% off in the Midwest and was quite pleased with the deal. If someone comes on here and says they got 15% off, good for them. Different time, different place, different car. I've had mine just over a year and still love it!

Thanks for everyone's help. I am the happy owner of a 2014 es350 grey/black. MSRP $44,741 (incl destination chg), I was able to negotiate 39,500 (before $750 cash back financing). It has everything I wanted, nav, premium pkg, blind spot detect, spoiler, hid, rear sun shade, rain sensing wipers, park assist, side molding, et al. More importantly, very pleased with the product.

Including your $750 financing rebate, you got 14.4% off MSRP, that's a good deal!

MSRP $40,950 paid $35,695. Tag/title $125, tax 6.5% - damn that hurt!! Oh yah they tinted my windows for $125. That was it. Did I mention tax was 6.5% . Thanks everyone for your posts it helped me know what a good deal might look like. It's funny I've wasted a lot of money in my life but I hate to leave to much money on the table on a car deal

Are you trying to say a 6.5% tax rate is high?
