What the 2013 ES looks like next to a 2013 GS
Here are the 2013 ES 300h & 2013 GS 450h side by side. They look nothing alike other than the signature spindle grille.

WOW..as an expert in identifying cars (mostly new) it took me few seconds to identify which was ES and GS. I just dont like that when they all look very much same. If i were to see these cars on my rear view mirror or in front of me i surely cannot come to immediate identification of them.
That is what i dont like about some new cars. They all have same look/design and that doesnt make them unique or identifiable. You can just say "ah yes its surely a Lexus". Same applies to interior design.
I guess they are trying to be cost effective in one way..

Yes, thanks for the side by side pictures. Very interesting.
To my eye they are very similar and at the same time somewhat different.
As imherenow mentioned, it took me a while to figure out which was which.

interesting to see what the IS will look like. Already we have M, L sized... with XL (LS) being more distinctive, if by nothing else, size being larger. If IS becomes a S, I think Lexus has fallen into the pit of designs like Audi and just gone with a S,M,L design theme and totally cheaped out on designing.
the typical person (95% of population) will NOT be able to tell these two vehicles apart. Most can't even tell the differences of the same vehicle across two generations, they will not be able to distinguish the GS from the ES, and from a buyer prospective, that is bad. Good for ES if people think it's a GS, but bad for GS if people think it's an ES. Again, that's only if you care what others think about what you drive...

They look VERY MUCH alike IMHO. Obviously, we can tell them apart but I echo what others have said that a layperson, or even a car enthusiast that isn't well versed on Lexus designs could easily mistake the two.
They certainly look far more alike than the ES and GS have ever looked before.
Its not just Lexus though. I walked out of my office the other day and two new black BMWs were sititng out front, one right in front of the other. I thought they were 5 series from maybe 20 feet away. When I walked up next to them and turned down the sidewalk to walk down the street I saw the one on front was a 3 series, the one in back was a 5! And I consider myself a car enthusiast that knows a lot about a wide variety of cars, BMWs just aren't my focus and I'm not as schooled in them as I am in Lexus vehicles. I could not tell them apart from the profile, despite one being bigger than the other. Its even harder with the GS and ES because they're more similar in size.

Good lookers, Miss the old GS.
I was pretty upset when I first saw the new GS... I LOVED the front end of the last GS, the separate, angular high and main beams were gorgeous... Even before the new ES was unveiled, I thought the 2013 GS looked too much like the ES...
I like the rear end and profile of the new GS, but really miss the aggressiveness of the front - the new one just seems too smooth and round.. I see just a marginally more agressive form of beige.
I really like the new ES, and its much closer to my price range, so I'm thinking about either buying a new ES or a CPO 2011 or so GS (must have the Levinson audio!)....
I hope the next generation improves on the grille design.

I mean, this is aggressive, not smooth and round?
But this is too smooth and round as compared to the old car?
We're going to have to agree to disagree on that one
