Default Text message notifcations not working anymore.

I have a 2013 ES 350 car, and a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone.

The text message notifications have always worked for me. But they stopped working 1 - 2 weeks ago. Now when I get a new text message, I don't get the notification on the console screen.

I checked the settings on the Lexus phone settings, and they seem fine. Nothing has changed with them.

The Bluetooth connection is working. When the car starts, I can see the phone being connected to, and also it says "transfer complete", indicating that the call history and messages have been synced.

If I hit the phone button from the steering wheel, and go to messages, I can still read existing messages.

Does anyone know how I can get the new text message notifications working again?

Hold the Power button down, and a window will appear with the option to Restart.
Restart [reboot] your Galaxy Note 4, and see if that does the fix.
If not, then let us know.

Thanks. I tried your suggestion. I restarted my phone and sent a few text messages to myself. I still didn't get notifications.

Any other suggestions?

how about deleting your phone from your car's memory, and setting it up again?

and is there a bluetooth setting on your phone that has to be turned on for your car to show notifications, like there is with the iPhone? Have you done any software updates on your phone recently?

I had exactly the same issue, was solved by playing with settings on my Android-based phone. I have the Nav system and an older version (4.0.4) of Android on my phone, so this may or may not work for you, but should be close if your phone is the problem.

First thing I noticed was that when (on my car, per page 187 of the Nav & Sound manual) I went to the Menu -> Setup -> Phone screen, I did NOT see the option for setting
"Messaging Setting." Just had the 3 other ones (Phone Sound, Phonebook, and Phone Display.) So I figured the problem was in the Bluetooth connection.

On my Android phone I went to the Settings -> Bluetooth screen and then hit Advanced under my Menu options. There were 3 settings here, one of which was "Message access" which was turned off. Turning it on solved my issues, the "Messaging Setting" option was available on my car's screen and things worked.

During this process, trying to do other debugging, I had already deleted the Bluetooth pairings on the phone and car, so I'm not sure if that is necessary or not. You might just try turning the option on your phone and linking to your car and see if that fixes it, else add the step of deleting your pairing and doing the pairing again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried deleting the phone from my car's memory, and setting it up again.

It didn't help.

I also realized that if I send text messages to myself, the ones that come to my inbox don't appear through the Lexus text message reader.

So then I started sending text messages to invalid numbers to force an "invalid number" response text message.

Those ones do appear in my inbox, but only when I re-sync the text messages (such as when I start the power on the car). I'm still not getting the notifications.

As for software updates, the only ones I can think of are the normal OS updates. Nothing out of the ordinary.

I've always had the "Message Setting" on the car's Menu -> Setup -> Phone menu option. I've checked for it a lot the past few days, to see if anything was wrong or missing. And I've always found it.

I also checked the "Message access" in Bluetooth on my Android phone. It's set to on also.

Wow, it sounds like you must go into the Setting of your cell phone, do a Backup, then do a Hard Reset.

nuraman00. This is a known issue with many Samsung phones in our Lexus cars and here is the explanation. You connect an I-Phone to your Lexus and allow for messages, only messages that are received while the phone is connected to the car are sent to the navigation system, and then read aloud if you choose. Samsung phones, when connected to our cars, try to send the car every single text message, and email that is stored in the phone to the navigation system. This usually is not a big deal when we are only talking about a few hundred text messages and emails. As your phone collects more and more texts and emails, eventually the navigation system reaches its limit that it can handle, and strange things start to happen. The first of which is the texts will stop working. If you continue to pile on more and more texts and emails onto your phone eventually the phone will start randomly disconnecting from the bluetooth altogether, and will hardly function as a phone or audio player while in the car.

The Fix: You would need to delete the car from the phone, then delete the phone from the car. You would then need to delete every single text message and every single email off of your phone. (you can't just un-sync your email, because when you re-sync it will load all of those emails back onto the phone. Once you have deleted everything, power cycle the phone ( full battery pull is better if it is removable). Then you pair your phone back up to the car and you should be good to go. Keep in mind that once your phone reaches that same number of stored emails and texts it will most likely start to encounter the same problem again. You would need to redo this procedure.

I could not get my '14 ES 350 w/nav, which is paired with my LG Android phone running 5.0.1, to display or read text messages (calling works fine) until I switched from Google+ to Hangouts for the default message app on the phone. The Lexus setup screen then displayed the additional "message setting" box discussed in previous replies. I did re-pair the phone and car Bluetooth after the app switch.

It sounds like there are different fixes for different phones, the joys of modern technology

Here's something else to try: I also have an Android phone, Google Pixel with Android version 7.1 Nougat which came out a few days ago. The default text app was "Hangouts" but is now "Messenger". I think Nelexus could be right, different fixes for different phones. Can't hurt to try it out.
Wish you success...

I just saw these last 3 replies. I didn't get email notifications of them, even though I got them for earlier replies within the thread.

I visited the Lexus dealer yesterday (Saturday). The technology specialist said I had to delete text messages and emails from my phone, because the Lexus software had a limit of 100 messages. I told him that I'd had a conversation during this year with several hundred messages in it alone, and that the notifications had been working up until a few weeks ago. He told me to still try deleting messages and emails. I said I would, but that they needed to make the limit either use configurable, or show some kind of warning when text messages could no longer be stored on the Lexus software.

I don't store emails on the phone, only text messages. So while getting my car serviced, I spent about an hour deleting text messages. I didn't delete all of them, but probably a few hundred.

Then when I got my car back, notifications started working again.

So 2GSKaizen's suggestion was the same as the technology specialist's, and it worked.

If/when I reach the limit again, should I try changing the messaging app then to something else, to see if it fixes it? Can someone link to some screen shots or video of what the Google+ messaging app looks like, as well as Hangouts? I'm using the default messaging app.

I have a 2014 ES350 and a Note 4. I don't get ANY text messages notifications. I've taken my car back to the dealer on several occasions and I still have the problem. Has anyone else had this issue?7

Has the dealer ever been able to resolve it?
