Hi all, I'm a newby to this site.

2007 ES350 116k miles on her.

Left the restaurant last night and noticed 3 MIL lit up (check engine, tracking, triangled !). After reading other posts on this site having suggestions of getting a code reading I shot straight over to Sears and purchased an OBD-II diagnostic tool (47177).

I have three sets of codes:

Std test:
- P0990 Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch (TPS3) Circuit High
- P0741 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Performance or Stuck Off
- P0990 Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch (TPS3) Circuit High

ABS mode:
- C1201 Engine Control Malfunction

Lexus Enhanced:
- B2799 Engine Control Malfunction
- P0990 Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch (TPS3) Circuit High
- P0990 Transmission Fluid Pressure Switch (TPS3) Circuit High

N.B. P0990 was listed twice in both the standard diagnostic and the Lexus Enhanced. These are the orders of the tests and their results.

I did notice a ticking noise when I first start the car. I also felt some hard shifting from 1st to 2nd gears last week. I also noticed once after morning start the transmission did not shift into "Drive" so I turned the car "off" and back "on" again and the car was then able to go into gear.

Any of you gurus had this scenario and/or can you get me pointed in the right direction?

Your pressure solenoid gave up so replace it.

would this have happened because I stepped on the accelerator while in reverse? What causes this silenoid to go out?

BTW, I had a new symptom tonight. I lose reverse after driving 5 miles. Had it back after 4 hours of no driving.

Lj, thank you for the confirmation and pic.

I will review the diagram and compare with the physical vehicle to locate and determine how to remove and replace. Perhaps it is held into place with a hex capscrew? Any advice for a novice/hobby auto mechanic? estimated time to remove and replace? Will the sensors automatically reset or is there a specific procedure to do such?

I think you will have to reset the lights. Get a Techstream from Ali or Amazon.

I think the solenoid is held by a 10mm bolt.

Maybe it will be smart do a transmission oil change/filter.

The filter (strainer) and ATF made sense as this vehicle was purchased at 116k miles from the original owner who stopped servicing at Lexus at warranty termination. As I had to remove the ATF pan to swap out solenoids, $75 for the strainer, and $110 for the ATF-WS ($9.90 at Toyota, $9.95 at Lexus) I consider it preventative maintenance with no extra labor cost (my time).

My old ATF was less looking like molasses as LJ's photos but it did smell and taste burnt ;-) compared to the new. There was also very fine grit ferrous material on both magnets.

To remove the solenoid, I had to remove about 5x 10mm bolts. I also destroyed the old solenoid's connector latch, but it was going into the bin anyway. I state this for those who may be tempted to remove perfectly functioning solenoids for what ever reason, you risk having to buy new ones at an average of $200 a pop and there are 7x total, curiosity can get expensive real fast.

I could not get my newly arrived Techstream to function with the provided serial, nor the evaluation feature (any suggestions?), so I measured the transmission case with a Fluke IR camera for the ATF level adjustment. When all was complete, I cleared the error codes with my Innova 3100iSC.

Parts Cost:

• Solenoid 35290-33040 = MSRP:$268.84 PAID: $155.64 ex-tax (mail ordered from Lexus South Atlanta)
• ATF Pan Gasket 35168-08010 = MSRP: $18.85 PAID: $11.59 ex-tax (mail ordered from Lexus South Atlanta)
• Strainer (ATF filter) 35330-48020 = MSRP: $118.65 PAID: $74.49 ex-tax (mail ordered from Lexus South Atlanta)
• O-ring for Stariner 90301-A0026 = MSRP: $5.78 PAID: $3.02 ex-tax (mail ordered from Lexus South Atlanta)
• ATF-WS 00289-ATFWS = MSRP: PAID: $9.90 x 11 = $108.90 ex-tax (Tansky Toyota Dublin)
• MAC 15oz Aerosol degreaser 6200 = MSRP: $5.86 PAID: $2.99 ex-tax (NAPA Auto Parts Linworth)

So at $316.63 before tax in parts & materials I saved myself over $500 in repair costs that Lexus would have eagerly charged me had I not had some excellent advice and information thanks to LJ. (FYI: I did not add account for the $24 delivery charge of parts nor the $15 Techstream and its $15 rapid delivery costs.)

I received an "approximate" estimate from Germain Lexus Dublin for labor and ATF with the parts that I supply for $630. $623 (Germain) + $244.74 (parts I purchased) = $874.74 (Total) before taxes). Hence $874.74 - $316.63 = $558.11 saved before taxes by doing the job myself as a novice with the proper tools and LJ's excellent tutorial.

Although I enjoy saving the money for a repair due to my own stupid act, I was more driven to complete this operation to see if I was capable of what seemed to be a complicated endeavor. Now that it has been successfully completed, I have gain confidence in my mechanical aptitude and a great self-satisfaction.

I owe LJ my gratitude and at least a beer over a rugby match.

I added some handy info to LJ's filter & ATF replacement tutorial that I hope to be helpful.

Do you notice any difference in shifting?

I think you can download the Techstream software from the internet.
You need to install Techstream v10.10.18 or v10.30.029 plus mini-vci-driver 8.30.023.
I have them both but I'm not sure how I can send them to you because they are pretty big (150 MB + 8 MB).

I have 10.30.029 installed but also have 10.10.018, 10.00.028, and 9.30.002 on a CD-R. I may have found a work around for Techstream, I'll keep everyone posted of my results.

Looks like I may have more work to do.

DTCs:

3. P2757 Torque Converter Clutch Pressure Control Solenoid Control Circuit Performance Or Stuck Off

These may be occurring when reducing speed and the transmission downshifts. Seems to have a real hard downshift from 2nd to 1st when gradually stopping (slow coasting with slight brake pedal type of stop. Have lost reverse while DTC's are lit.

I now have Techstream running in evaluation mode with 29 more starts available.

After clearing DTCs with my Craftsman OBD-II diagnostic tool (47177) private labelled Innova 3100iSC, I connected Techstream in ECT mode>Data List

1. ran through the gear shifter positions P>R>N>D which Techstream recognized all correctly.
2. shifted over to S (sportdrive) which Techstream recognized.
3. up shifted in S which Techstream did NOT recognize
4. down shifted in S which Techstream did NOT recognize

• Are results #3 and #4 normal?
• What is the function of TPS3?
• Where is the TPS3 located? (Drawing please).
• Does anyone have a clear and large drawing showing the location of the TCM? I found the following but it is for an RX (http://workshop-manuals.com/lexus/rx...xle/page_5838/) I also found the following from a Venza, Can I assume it will be the same on the ES350? (http://workshop-manuals.com/toyota/v...ion/locations/)

• Have there been recall/updates for the TCM programming? I found a doc suggesting such:

• Why would I be losing the R (reverse gear) after the DTC's appear listed during this posting?
• It seems that the DTC's are not always the same, is this the sign that the TCM needs flashed?
• Is there a method for "resetting" the TCM, disconnecting the battery for X seconds for example?

The DTC's seem to be initiated upon low speed breaking and/or deceleration. Any comments?
