Is there a way to check if the car's odometer has been altered (ie. lowered) in any way to show lower mileage?

Besides being against the law it is very difficult to do as the ECU knows if it has been disconnected or replaced. I suspect someone has done it but it wouldn't be worth the trouble. If you are worried make sure you look at the overall condition of the car both inside and out and underneath too.

About the only way to alter the odometer is to completely replace the ECU (vehicle computer) with a brand new one. As said above, it's not worth it.

well. you can turn the odometer off very easily and then it won't add additional mileage, and this is something very easy to do
