Battery Dead Alternator Bad?
#20
Looks like the regulator in the alternator is bad. You should be getting around 14V at idle. You'll need to pull the alternator as I don't think you can remove the back of the unit to replace the regulator.

I've had more regulators go out on me than I care to admit. I started proactively replacing my batteries every 3.5 years and haven't had that problem since. Good luck with your DIY.

The "rust" is not the usual water and salt type of corrosion you normally see on cars, it is due to the failure of the bearing or other metal parts inside the coupler. I believe it is technically called "fretting" corrosion.

"Fretting corrosion refers to corrosion damage at the asperities of contact surfaces. This damage is induced under load and in the presence of repeated relative surface motion, as induced for example by vibration."
