Default Inspecting/replacing brake pads

I have a 2008 ES 350 and the owners manual says to inspect the brakes every 5000 miles. I'm sure this is either a cya or help the dealer make money suggestion. In the real world, how often, given city driving, should i have my brake pads and rotors checked. I am assuming the pads will fail way before the rotors. I currently have 23,000 miles on the car.

Depending on driving habit, how often you drive the vehicle, and what type of pads; pads will last anywhere from 35,000 to 55,000. Interval inspections is to make sure there is no failure in any of the brake components; better to catch it early to prevent something that can be dangerous as it is a safety feature of the vehicle. Hope that helps.

You don't have to ispect them every 5000 miles. Just drive and you'll hear squeking noise when they're ready to replace.

I rotate my tires every time I change the oil (5000 miles), and it only takes a few seconds to shine a flashlight on the calipers to take a look at the pads and rotors. If you put the car up on a lift, you don't even need to remove the tires to check the brakes. We also have annual inspections here, and the brakes are inspected at that time.

My '05 has 106K miles and the brakes are the factory originals.
