So impressed with my recent fuel economy figures
I didn't buy my ES with fuel economy in mind, but I'm happy to announce that on my recent trip to Black Hills of South Dakota I got some pretty incredible numbers, I just thought I'd share.
I bought the car in early March of this year, but haven't taken it on a long trip until just recently. Picture this, two adults, a teenager and a 7-year old, trunk full of luggage and roads where 80 MPH was the posted speed limit pretty much most of the way, and then mountains with constant 87+ temperatures outside and AC blowing hard inside. Somewhere between the natural beauty of the surroundings, my black sapphire Lexus paid me back not only with great comfort, but amazing fuel economy. My mileage was improving with each tankful and got as high as 31.5 MPGs which I thought was incredible. Anyway, just thought I'd share as I'm now looking forward to many more trips in this awesome car.

It really is an amazing blend of performance and fuel economy. I average 28 mpg traveling through Northern Virginia for work with a daily commute of around 150 miles. My last car was an 09 accord that had the same size engine and almost identical curb weight and it averaged 24.5 on a good day.
I've found the optimum outdoor temp for mpg in our generation of the ES is 77+ degrees. In the past I've gone down to average 26 mpg during winter months.

I think you'll find the reason you have worse gas mileage in the winter is because of the blending of the fuel during winter months.
Cooler air is actually more efficient for cars as there is less power loss to heat soak.
30+ highway/freeway is reached quite easily as long as you don't have a lead foot.

Yeah; my daily commute recently expanded to about 33 miles one way; I filled up mid day yesterday and the mpg readout is sitting at just a touch over 32. I know it's optimistic, but anything realistically over 30 and it's hard to justify putting money into an economy car just for fuel savings.

The interesting thing is that Toyota/Lexus has been using this drivetrain (3.5 V6 and 6 speed trans) for over 10 model years, and it's still competitive in terms of smoothness, performance and fuel economy.

I'm not really looking forward to winter months with my ES as far as fuel economy goes. Up here in the mid-western prairies of Canada, temperatures can dip to well below -35ºF and stay around that mark for days (no, I wish I was joking or exaggerating). Needless to say, in those temperatures, nobody's fuel economy is even remotely tolerable, doubt Lexus will do any good. Getting 31.5 MPGs (actual, carefully calculated, not onboard computer-estimated) was really nice, especially that this figure is much higher than EPA estimates and achieved on hot and mountainous roads. On a trip like this, driving a crappy little car would get you a few extra MPGs and a whole lot less comfort and amenities. I am clearly impressed.

Yeah- cooler air, winter gas, firmer tires. There's a lot of reasons mpg suffers during the winter months. The ES still does fantastic overall.
On another note, I've used seafoam a few times in the gas tank and haven't been able to really notice a difference. I always use the regular 87 gas as well.

genesis does have 18 City 22 Combined 29 Highway, so this one is similar but id be hard pressed to pay through the nose for hyundai.

It's safe to say that it's nice the ES350 with 268-270 hp. is one of the cars that can pretty easily hit 30 mpg on the highway, which is above it's EPA estimate.
