Been doing my own oil for decades now on all cars I've ever owned. Most OEMs are ok with it as long as you keep the records of it...

Just a point here , if the filter drain cap is on tight all you need to do is use a 3/8" ratchet wrench and you can unscrew the filter housing .

This is exactly what I did Tightened the drain plug so tightly that when I turn it the whole housing would too. Makes the filter change easier...

I don't change my own oil but am in the garage that does (family friend Gulf station). Mobil 1 synthetic, Hastings filter every 5,000 miles or 4-5 months. 2011 has only 16,000 miles now, bought in 10/2011 so I go by time.

I don't change my own oil as it is a major pain in the extreme cold (i.e. -20 or below). I use the dealer, and use the loaner vehicles, so it nets out. They also wash the car for me and do courtesy winter tire changeover.

Nets out to like a $20 oil change in the end. Well worth it in my mind.

We almost hit 60F here in New Mexico today. Plus I have a garage and space heater to take the edge off. But if I can get the dealer to do it for ~$50, I'll probably just have them do it because I'd probably spend about $35 just in filter and oil, and I will also get a car wash out of the deal.

LOL, the hot/cold seems to be a relative term. Yesterday I repaired a shock mount on my sisters Mazda3 and it was -6F here. I did it in the garage with a small space heater, and if it was 60F I would have done it outside on the driveway The last oil change I did was on the driveway and it was in mid-30s that day, all relative

Is it possible to replace the filer housing with something like this:

and not have to use the filter tool?

I am not aware of any 2GR engines that have the spin-on filter type so there isn't OEM version of it nor have heard of anyone converting to it using other Toyota engine parts. This is not to say that there may be aftermarket version of it. For example, I have taken Mazda3 2.0L engine filter housing (spin-on) and installed it without a problem on their 2.3L engine (cartridge type filter)...

First time I changed oil on 2GR was a bit pita but now I find it easy and quick to do after having done many changes. Besides, now I like that I can see inside the filter to see what's been filtered out...
